1919 – 1929 28 JUNE 1919 Treaty of Versailles signed by German delegation in Paris. 10 JANUARY 1920 League of Nations opening session. 1 DECEMBER 1925 Locarno Treaty signed con. rming the post-war settlement in Western Europe. 10 SEPTEMBER 1926 Germany is admitted to the League of Nations. 29 OCTOBER 1929 Wall Street Crash triggers worldwide economic slump. 9 JULY 1932 Lausanne conference suspends German reparation payments. The formal end of hostilities in the First World War on 11 November 1918 left Europe shattered by four years of the bloodiest conflict in history: more than 8,000,000 had been killed; twice as many maimed; millions more the victims of starvation or disease brought on by wartime conditions.
