5 MAY−5 NOVEMBER 1942 29 MAY 1942 All Jews in the German-occupied zone of France ordered to wear the yellow Star of David. 4 JUNE 1942 Battle of Midway halts Japanese plans to dominate the Pacific. 22 JUNE 1942 Pierre Laval reaches agreement with Germany on supply of French labor. 20 JUNE 1942 Roosevelt and Churchill agree to an invasion of French colonies in North Africa later known as Operation “Torch”. With Japanese expansion in Southeast Asia and naval forays towards India, the British and South African governments feared that Japan might move into the western Indian Ocean to occupy the Vichy French island of Madagascar.
