OPERATIONS 1944–1945

The last eighteen months of war saw the German and Japanese empires forced back on all fronts. The invasion of northern France in June 1944 opened up the path to the heart of German resistance. In Italy progress was slow up the narrow, mountainous peninsula. In the east, Soviet armies pushed into Poland by August 1944, and into Germany itself by the start of 1945. Berlin was captured in May. In the Pacific, Japanese resistance had to be worn down slowly, island by island. The army attacked through the Philippines, the US Navy through the islands of the central Pacific, finally seizing Okinawa by June 1945 and paving the way for possible invasion. Atomic bombs ended the war in the Pacific in August 1945.…
