18 DECEMBER 1940 —22 JUNE 1941 9 DECEMBER 1940 First British offensive in the Western Desert begins. 29 DECEMBER 1940 Roosevelt pledges that the US will be “the great arsenal of democracy”. 30 JANUARY 1941 Germany threatens to attack all neutral shipping supplying Britain. 27 MARCH 1941 Coup in Belgrade – Yugoslavia – renounces the Tripartite Pact. 10 MAY 1941 Rudolf Hess, Hitler’s deputy, flies to Britain to broker peace. 27 MAY 1941 Roosevelt declares unlimited national emergency. 14 JUNE 1941 German and Italian assets frozen in the US. Hitler had since the 1920s thought that a natural area for German imperial expansion lay in the agriculturally and raw-material rich territories of the western Soviet Union. This was the area designated as “living space” (Lebensraum) for the German master race.…
