Egypt. 2 MAY 1941 Pro-Axis government in Iraq calls for military assistance. 10 MAY 1941 Rudolph Hess flies on a “peace mission” to Britain. 20 MAY 1941 German paratroopers land on Crete. 31 MAY 1941 General Student orders “exemplary terror” against partisans. 2 JUNE 1941 Hitler tells Mussolini of his plans to attack the Soviet Union. With the expulsion of British forces from mainland Greece, Hitler was anxious to complete the campaign by capturing the island of Crete which would otherwise remain a potential base for air attacks on the German flank or against oil targets in Romania.
