OPERATIONS 1941–1942

From May 1941 to summer of the following year, the Axis powers ruled almost unchallenged over Western Europe. This permitted Hitler to launch an unprovoked invasion of the Soviet Union in autumn 1941, which after initial rapid advances stalled outside Moscow in the winter snow, and, despite reaching into the Caucasus the next spring, never quite succeeded in defeating the Soviets. In eastern Asia, the Japanese joined the conflict, launching a series of lightning assaults, pushing the paralysed British forces out of the Malay peninsula and capturing the vital strategic position of Singapore.
