JUNE 1940— MARCH 1941 9 JULY 1940 HMS Warspite damages Italian battleship Giulio Cesare. 13 SEPTEMBER 1940 Italian forces invade Egypt. 28 OCTOBER 1940 Italian army begins invasion of Greece from Albania. 11 NOVEMBER 1940 British aircraft destroy Italian warships at Taranto. 20 NOVEMBER 1940 HItler offers Mussolini German air support in Mediterranean. 30 MARCH 1941 Cunningham’s fleet returns to Alexandria without loss after the Battle of Matapan. When the war opened in the Mediterranean in June 1940 the balance of forces between the Marina Italiana and the Royal Navy was strongly in Italy’s favour.
