16 JULY—19 SEPTEMBER 1940 27 JUNE 1940 German air force proposes landing in England. 16 JULY 1940 Hitler issues “Sealion” directive. 9 AUGUST 1940 British garrison pulled out of Shanghai for use on other fronts. 13 SEPTEMBER 1940 Italian army enters Egypt. 7 OCTOBER 1940 German forces occupy Romania to protect oil interests. 12 OCTOBER 1940 Hitler postpones “Sealion” indefinitely. The defeat of France and the expulsion of British forces from mainland Europe presented Hitler with a quite unexpected opportunity.
