4—17 JUNE 1940 10JUNE 1940 Italy declares war on France and Britain. 14 JUNE 1940 Paris falls to the German military. 16 JUNE 1940 Premier Paul Reynaud resigns. 19 JUNE 1940 German army reaches Atlantic coast at Brest. 20 JUNE 1940 Japan forces France to agree to Japanese naval vessels in Indo-China. 1 JULY 1940 French parliament votes Marshal Pétain special powers, bringing the Third Republic to an end. The surrender of Belgium and the British evacuation from Dunkirk left France fighting almost alone against the German advance.
