30 NOVEMBER 1939 —12 MARCH 1940 18 AUGUST 1939 Soviet negotiators offer Finland economic and military “aid”. Finns refuse. 17 SEPTEMBER 1939 Molotov assures Finns that their neutrality will be respected. 29 OCTOBER 1939 Red Army ordered to begin planning war against Finland. 13 MARCH 1940 Soviet-Finnish ceasefire comes into force. 7 MAY 1940 Voroshilov sacked as Soviet Commissar for Defence. The “Winter War” waged by the Soviet Union against neighboring Finland was the first major test for the massive Red Army since the Russian Civil War in the early 1920s. The immediate cause was the Soviet search for greater military security in the Baltic region.
