Chez Geoffrey Bawa à Colombo

Au début de sa carrière, l’architecte sri-lankais Geoffrey Bawa a bâti une maison qui allait devenir la sienne pour la vie. Héritage architectural intact, elle témoigne de son interprétation locale du modernisme et de la conscience qu’il avait des implications culturelles de ses réalisations.

Malgré une entrée tardive dans l’architecture – il obtient son diplôme en 1957, à l’âge de 38 ans – Geoffrey Manning Bawa (1919-2003) est reconnu comme l’un des architectes les plus influents du XXe siècle et considéré comme le père du modernisme tropical, ce mouvement architectural qui associe habitat vernaculaire et principes du modernisme hérités du Bauhaus et de Le Corbusier. Est-ce parce qu’il est né d’une mère d’origine anglaise et d’un père sri-lankais ? Toute la vie comme l’œuvre de Geoffrey Bawa seront un pont jeté entre les cultures, les continents et les époques.
