The Six Percent: A Memoir on the Aftermath of Violence

After a near-death experience at her attacker's hands, 20-year-old Clara
returns to her committed relationship, believing the abuse was a one
time, alcohol-driven mistake. Quickly it becomes clear Clara's hopes
were manipulated, and she suffers weeks of repeated sexual violence,
fearing for her life and the one growing inside her. Clara must make a
terrifying decision between raising a child as a single mother or staying
in a physically dangerous relationship-and she chooses to fight for
their safety.

This story illuminates what the 6% of victims who report to the police in
Canada are subjected to highlighting the reason why it's such a small
number who have enough faith in the justice system to come forward.
Clara writes her experience of testifying within the Canadian Justice
System as a call for change. When only 12% of reported sexual assaults
result in conviction, and only 7% result in incarceration, the only
guarantee in reporting is re-victimization and trauma.
