With its peaceful setting and blend of traditional and contemporary features, it’s hard to imagine that Nichola Carr’s relaxed Northumberland home once lay at the heart of cross-border skirmishes. It dates back to the 1700s and was originally part of a bastle – one of a network of fortified farmhouses across the county – its stout walls designed to deter raiders from the North.
Nichola and her husband Andrew, a property developer, already had a series of renovations under their belts when their half of the farmhouse came on the market. ‘We loved the location, with its beautiful views, and could see the potential in the building,’ says Nichola. ‘It was dilapidated but the stonework was just fabulous.’
