When Ian Race and John Evans bought their east London house, they wanted to create a home that felt sociable, open and as full of natural light as possible. The property had good ceiling heights and a large window at the front, but the rear rooms were a dimly lit muddle of doors and awkward spaces, with a separate WC and a bathroom that had seen better days.
Beside the long, narrow kitchen, there was an equally slim extension that barely had space for a table. ‘Part of our vision included a large kitchen-diner, with a table next to sliding doors overlooking the garden,’ says Ian. To realise the property’s potential, he and John called upon Brian O’Tuama Architects, who suggested a side return extension to create a more open kitchen-diner.…
