20,000 Miles for Grouse and Pheasants continues the stories of mid-life adventures shared by
the authors. At age 46, Gary and Jean abandoned traditional employment and began fieldwork, to
help preserve the natural environment and contribute to scientific knowledge about birds. Parts
One and Two of 20,000 miles for Grouse and Pheasants are the authors' adventures in early 1994 while monitoring Greater Sage-Grouse and Ring-necked Pheasants as field biologists working for the Colorado Division of Wildlife. Part Three summarizes many of Jean's additional ornithological projects near their home in Wisconsin. The science involved in fieldwork is described, but of equal interest and focus are the preparation and organization required. This new book completes the trilogy of their outdoor adventures and wildlife work over the course of 20 years.

The previous books in this series are Seven Summers with Peregrines and On Assignment in the Wild. The three books encompass experiences as diverse as restoration work within the Boundary Waters of Minnesota, and working with Aplomado Falcons in Texas, Bald Eagles in Arizona, Sharp-tailed Grouse and Greater Sage-Grouse in Wyoming, birds of Wisconsin, and the afore-mentioned Greater Sage-Grouse and Ring-necked Pheasants in Colorado. In addition, the authors camped in the mountainous areas of Idaho, Montana, and Wyoming for months at a time caring for young Peregrine Falcons during each of seven consecutive summers.
