Every project starts somewhere and this one began at the Bike Shed Show at Tobacco Dock in London or, to be more accurate, when my mate Matt Donaldson turned to me and said, “I bet you can’t build a bike good enough for here.” Well, that set me to work!
THE DOUBTER
“I BET YOU CAN’T BUILD A BIKE GOOD ENOUGH FOR THE BIKE SHED SHOW.” Matt’s comment not only got me all fired up to prove him wrong, it also produced the bike’s name: The Doubter. Not that there was a bike to be built at the point when he threw down that challenge, but I soon rectified that by buying a 2007 Royal Enfield Bullet from a chap in Glastonbury. I took it back home to Gloucester where my firm, Howard Street Motors, is based, and before you could even say ‘Howard Street Motors’ I’d set about stripping the bike down.
