Sure, it’s a valid concern, but trust that your body knows exactly how much your baby needs, and your baby is not going hungry. This is because your breast milk works on a supply-and-demand principle – basically, your baby tells your body how much milk to make when drinking. The more he drinks, the more milk you produce. Q: My little boy was just a week old when his tummy turned rock hard and he started crying inconsolably. I went to the doctor the next day, and he diagnosed colic. I didn’t really agree with the diagnosis and spent the afternoon reading up about reflux, which to me felt closer to the truth. That evening though, he was so much worse that we went straight back to the doctor. He gave him one look and had him admitted to hospital. Turns out he had septicaemia. “YES, THE NAPPIES THESE DAYS ARE SUPER ABSORBENT, BUT THIS DOESN’T MEAN THEY SHOULD BE LEFT UNCHANGED FOR HOURS ON END” WHILE THE TERM “nappy rash” is a blanket expression for any skin complaint that happens in a baby’s nappy area, there isn’t only one kind of nappy rash. It most commonly falls under one of three skin conditions – contact dermatitis, eczema and thrush. CONTACT DERMATITIS According to Cape Town based paediatrician Dr Paul Sinclair, a major cause of nappy rash is skin irritation caused by urine. “While a baby girl would get inflammation on her external labia if left in a wet nappy for too long, a baby boy would get it on his contact area. Nappy rash and antibiotics

Antibiotics often trigger diarrhoea, which causes two kinds of nappy rash: contact dermatitis from the stool and secondary thrush from the gut. The result is not pretty, and you’re usually left with a very unhappy baby. “Antibiotics kill 80 percent of the healthy bugs in your baby’s gut, which leaves the fungus with no competition, so it grows freely, resulting in thrush. “A child with recurrent thrush who is on antibiotics should be on an anti-fungal too,” maintains Dr Paul Sinclair, a Cape Town paediatrician. While there isn’t hard evidence that probiotics reduce thrush and nappy rashes, lots of parents use them as they’ve been shown to reduce the severity of antibiotic-induced diarrhoea. “Some parents even use a topical roll-on probiotic cream in the nappy area,” he says.…

A HEALTHY HUMAN has several hundred beneficial bacterial species living in the digestive tract. This is referred to as the gut microbiome. It works hard to maintain the lining of the gut, to digest food, to get rid of toxins, to act as a barrier against bad bacteria and to support the nervous and immune systems. Q: My 18-month-old daughter started sleeping through at around 11 months and used to be a very good sleeper. But for the past two weeks she has been waking up at least two to three times a night, screaming inconsolably, refusing to take the dummy and get back into her cot. MIKE AND ANDREA Ouwerkerk both had a deep-seated desire to adopt. “When we met, it was the cherry on top when we realised we weren’t going to have to convince the other person about adoption,” Andrea says. ✱ PRETTY BUBBLES 1 cup water2 tablespoons of glycerine4 tablespoons of dishwashing liquid Mix it all together very slowly and gently so that it doesn’t foam. ✱ GIANT BUBBLES 6 cups water½ cup corn starch½ cup dishwashing liquid1 tablespoon baking powder1 tablespoon glycerine Pour the water into a shallow bowl. Let the corn starch dissolve in it. Gently stir the other ingredients into the mix. Guard against making it foam. Let the mix rest for an hour, and then very gently stir it again. LYNN NATHEN is a mother of five beautiful children – Chanté (22), Tamzyn (16), Wesley (14), Jamie-Lee (4) and Cody (2). ACCORDING TO A recent study, only 8 percent of people actually see their New Year’s resolutions through. That number shouldn’t surprise anyone: real long-lasting change is messy, time-consuming and full of false starts. In January 2018, I made two resolutions of my own: to quit smoking and be a perfect father. At the time, I’d been a smoker for four years and a father for all of two months.
