Norwegian explorer Erling Kagge began a search for silence, and he started his journey in Antarctica. He stepped out alone onto the ice plateau and started to walk. He was inspired by a line from Norwegian poet Jon Fosse - “there is a love no one remembers”. At twelve weeks pregnant, I logged onto my online medical portal to confirm a routine doctor’s appointment. It was a crisp autumn day in Connecticut, already deliciously mapped out. That night my husband and I would stay in a quaint bed and breakfast. During the day there were plans for a pub lunch, antiquing, and a walk. It was 2020, just as restaurants and hotels were opening up after months of lockdowns in New York, and the weekend away was meaningful to us. Her governess kept the keys… “Before she went down to dinner every night, she would lock up my feet,” recalled Sitwell. The girl couldn’t leave her bed, even if the house were on fire. Edith had been diagnosed with a curvature of the spine and weak ankles. When she wasn’t in bed, she was enclosed in an orthopaedic back brace to correct her posture. She called it her prison of iron, her ‘Bastille’. Edith grew up in Renishaw Hall, a beautiful country house in Derbyshire, England. As a city, Milan isn’t particularly loved by its fellow Italians - no ‘cradle of the Renaissance’, no ‘Serenissima’. It has its fair share of both history and museums, but less blatant, less Lonely Planet. Moreover, the sun seems to have forgotten that Milan is in Italy and is all too often replaced by grey skies and cold temperatures - not exactly your idyllic ‘O Sole Mio’ Italian setting. Milan also has the reputation of being unfriendly, workaholic, stressful and, last but not least, crazy expensive. It’s no wonder that the rest of Italy, being mostly cool, laid-back and relatively cheap (at least compared to the rest of Europe) thinks so little of it: a stressful swamp with expensive pizza. One day the senior nurse asked if I could help another nurse dispense lunchtime medications to the residents and of course I agreed. “Wonderful,” she said, “That frees me up to do some actual nursing.” She pulled up a chair facing one of the residents, took her hand and began a warm and attentive chat. If our days have become crowded containers for what we did or did not do, perhaps we do not need to pursue more ways to be productive, but rather shake up the contents. I’ve had too many days to count that have been flattened by productivity guilt. They follow a pattern: there is the thing I should be doing, but for whatever reason I find myself not doing the thing at this time, so instead I don’t do anything. Instead of turning my attention to something else that can be done, the day seems to evaporate as I sit, stifled by the taunt, I didn’t do the thing today, I didn’t do the thing today.
