I SEEM TO HAVE spent a lot of my time on Camper Jam prep in the last few months and by the time you read this I’ll either be at the show, or in a darkened room somewhere trying to recover from it… I hope and expect it to be another belter! Two local shows have occurred recently, Stonor Park’s 40th incarnation was great, and Dubs In The Park, which as I write this is still in the very near future. Some Details At Last Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles is now presenting the first design details of its new Transporter generation, even if we still don’t have a decent picture… They have announced rather grandly, “We are transferring the DNA of our icon into modern times with the completely new Transporter. AFTER THE SUCCESSFUL MOVE last year, the BHP Performance show was back on at the Kent Event Centre in Maidstone. Moved from the bank holiday Monday to Sunday to try and eliminate any traffic issues, added in with a new entry and exiting system, this all proved a worthwhile investment in time and effort. Saturday was set up day with cars entering into one of the three main halls allowed entry to set up and get the vehicles cleaned and positioned ready for the public. The media team were also allowed entry to get shots of the vehicles and have a decent chat with the owners, all before the public descended into the arena. ON 12 NOVEMBER 1949, Heinz Nordhoff launched Volkswagen’s second vehicle, the Transporter to the world’s automotive press. Final version prototypes were present for examination, while a sheaf of publicity material was set to illustrate the new VW’s attributes, compare it to existing vehicles and offer a technical summary. FIRST THINGS FIRST. THE van featured here was photographed not for the T4 of the long-nose variety it was, but for its airbrushed story. And in that respect, its white van man plain and simple Candy White paint, that’s LB9A for any anoraks out there, gave Nimbus Airbrush Art, or super talented Kev Hill, the best possible metal canvas to work on. WHILST THE RISE IN the mass appeal of camping and the lure of spending time outdoors kicked in at the start of the 20th Century, the campervan as we know it did not really get going till the nineteen fifties. However there are many much earlier examples of people converting or building their own “holiday cabin on wheels “going back as far as 1910. The example pictured here was taken in the early 1920’s in Washington State and shows a family relaxing in the great outdoors around their self-built “RV” on a model T Ford.
