But in five short years he has more than made up for lost time, amassing an astonishing array of Australian and international racing bikes of historical and sporting significance. The size of this collection (between 200–250 bicycles) suggests, if not physically, that the project has been evolving in Steve’s subconscious for many years. An adventure around the world is already a wild idea, but when you add in a couple of Bombtrack Beyond bikes and a whole lot of gear things get even more complicated. Luckily for Matty Waudby, his partner Clare Nattress, aka the Touring Artist, was more than willing to embrace a less-is-more approach after selling “everything [she] didn’t use” back in 2017 to adopt a minimalist lifestyle. “Why buy unnecessary material things? For a city as bike-obsessed as Melbourne, where you can get anything from a custom carbon frame to a bespoke leather bike seat, there are surprisingly few options when it comes to custom paint jobs. Until recently, if you asked your local bike store where you could get a scratch repaired or a wild new colour scheme, you’d have been advised to take your ride apart and ship it to Queensland to the team at Paint My Bike. Melbourne’s Mottainai Cycles specialises in vintage bicycles, so it follows that its name is the Japanese term for “a sense of regret concerning waste when the intrinsic value of an object or resource is not properly utilised”. The crew there is super passionate about restoration and this late–1970s number by Virginia – a small frame builder from Modena, Italy – epitomises Mottainai Cycles’ fastidious work. BLAST FROM THE PAST

These days, the river ride is a staple loop in Brisbane’s cycling scene. The ride has seen many iterations but the essence has remained the same: follow the river. It started in the 80s as a training ride which later came to be known as the Blasters ride – and if you could keep up, you would get to meet its mastermind, Johnny Whip. The Brisbane Blasters were cycling teams that raced between 1985-95. At their peak, they were attracting racers of all shapes and stripes; sprinting into corners, winning numerous races across Australia and flaunting their loud orange and blue jerseys to the annoyance of many. The number of violent offences involving knives has reached an all-time high in England and Wales in 2019, making the situation hard to describe as anything but an epidemic. So when London-based film director Matt Dempsey was commissioned by the Barbican to produce a short documentary on BikeStormz, a grassroots organisation tackling youth violent crime with bicycles and mass ride-outs, he was immediately gripped by the challenge. “This story was of particular interest to me because the youth demographic featured is one that’s not generally the first that comes to mind when talking about social action projects,” explains Dempsey. “Once we began filming, it was amazing to see how normal they were. An Anangu Pitjantjatjara Yankunytjatjara and Torres Strait Islander man from Mimili, a remote Indigenous community situated in the far north-west region of South Australia, Zibeon’s support of his community has led him to taking on athletic endeavours of which some could only dream. An early morning train marks the beginning of our Taiwan journey. It’s roughly 8am. My partner, Roma and I quickly scan the brightly lit 7-Eleven as we hear the inspector’s boarding whistle. Yakult in hand, we dash towards the swaying giant. Once on board, we go over our loosely planned route. Bikes are to be rented from Hualien, a thriving town on the east coast, and then six days later we will be in Taitung. Described as “one of the prominent cycle manufacturers in Western Europe”, Fongers was started by Albert Fongers in 1884. (No points for guessing where the brand’s name comes from.) Also one of the first manufacturers in the Netherlands, Fongers established its reputation for producing high quality bicycles and at one point supplied the army and many public services. Difficulties transitioning to mass production and disruption by war led to Fongers’ production coming to an end in 1970.
