Long before the days of Blackbeard and Anne Bonny, a very different pirate was wreaking havoc at sea. Barbary pirates were the outlaws of the waves before the golden age of piracy, and the Barbarossa brothers are two of history’s most famous examples. Together, they became legends and sailed around the Barbary Coast in Northern Africa way back in the 1500s. Barbarossa, which means ‘red beard’ in Italian, was the last name for brothers Aruj and Hizir, who became rich and powerful by accumulating treasure during their pirate adventures on the Mediterranean Sea. Bluefin tuna is rightfully seen among chefs as the king of the tuna species, prized mostly because of the fat marbling, particularly in the belly of larger specimens. In Japan the ‘toro’, as it’s known, can command rather ridiculous prices. When it’s in season, I like to buy whole sides of large bluefin tuna and use the loin for a couple of tuna dishes on the menu, and save the best part, the toro, for specials. Simply treated, it is outstanding. This dish came together quite quickly one morning recently. I had a vague idea of wanting to use fresh Australian truffles, which were just coming into season, and I also had a caramelised apple purée and some cauliflower on hand. PRESERVING HULL INTEGRITY IN POLYETHYLENE HULLS

Polyethylene is a remarkable material in that it has positive buoyancy, a degree of flex and impact damage resistance not found in fibreglass hulls. Due to the roto-moulding process, where polyethylene beads or powder heated to around 150 degrees in a steel mould literally flow into the bull shape required, solid colour throughout the hull is possible. My first experience of a polyethylene hull was a Nylex Pioneer 8 dinghy I borrowed in 1987 as a tender to my 6.7m plywood Bluebird yacht. The hull had sufficient flex not to damage the painted topsides and, cleverly, Nylex had moulded in a bottom channel section that gave the hull good directional control when rowing, and also provided a strengthening point for the internal liner. 1 NSW Mid-North Coast: Bream and samson fish We’ve had a great run of bream lately, in both the estuaries and along the ocean rocks. They were easy to find, fishing the washes close in on the headlands with pilchard cubes or bonito strips, or by setting up a berley trail in the rivers and lakes and using pink nippers, prawns, or slimy mackerel strips as bait. Offshore, the close in reefs have produced small samson fish (pictured) up to 4kg, which have turned up in catches of pearl perch and snapper, along with a few yellowtail kingfish making up the numbers. Over the coming month we should find more of the same, along with the arrival of yellowfin tuna which will make for some great sport and sashimi dinners.…

Assuming money was no object, should you buy the biggest, most seaworthy trailer boat you can find? Something around the 8m size mark? Catching fish has been an important survival skill for millennia. Using handmade hooks and lines – crude by today’s standards – early sailors roaming far from home and supplies relied upon the sea to provide its bounty. Coming from five generations of fishermen and having worked aboard a deep-keeled crab boat during all of my formative years, this is my favoured hull. It saved our lives in big seas on numerous occasions while we hauled crab pots in North Atlantic swells. These boats descended from designs of our Norwegian-Viking forefathers – double-ended and rounded hulls with long, deep keels and large bilge keels to further minimise yawing. Clough-BMD Joint Ventures has been awarded the construction tender for Darwin’s new ship lift. The selection followed a three-stage procurement process which spanned two years. Capable of servicing vessels of up to 5000 tonnes, it is intended that the ship lift will be used by multiple industries including offshore petroleum, fishing, pearling, Border Force, and Defence. This project will deliver a ship lift 26m wide, 103m long and 6m deep. It will also include wet berths and hard stand areas for ship repair and maintenance works; a blast and paint building; self-propelled modular transporter units to transport vessels around the facility; and an administration building. WA-based shipbuilder, Austal, has confirmed that the order for two additional patrol boats for the Royal Australian Navy (RAN), as announced during the federal election campaign, has been formally contracted. The proposed acquisition of two additional Evolved Cape-class Patrol Boats (ECCPBs) was first announced in April 2022. In June, Austal confirmed that a contract was in place. The original $324 million contract to construct six of the 58m ECCPBs was signed in May 2020. Two have been delivered, with another four vessels from the initial order in various stages of production at the company’s Henderson, WA, shipyard. The additional two ECCPBs, valued at $110 million (to be adjusted for relevant inflation impacts), brings the total number of vessels to be delivered to eight and extend production at the shipyard through…

Out of The Blue Adventures is now operating a new tourism vessel, including in the current whale watching season off the New South Wales coast. The 11.3m long Naiad design rigid inflatable has been named Into The Blue and is the second vessel in the Ballina-based operator’s fleet. Built by Yamba Welding and Engineering, the vessel is powered by a pair of 425hp Yamaha outboards. The 25-passenger vessel is fully accessible, allowing guests with wheelchairs and walkers the operator’s marine tourism offerings. Auriga gets outboard-powered pilot boat

A new small pilot boat has been built and delivered for operations out of Thursday Island. Auriga Group commissioned the vessel from Queensland boat builder Woody Marine Fabrications. The custom built solution is the 10.8m aluminium monohull Zay. Featuring a protective collar and small central wheelhouse with capacity for four people, the boat is powered by a pair of Yamaha F250 outboards with Yamaha’s Digital Electric Steering (DES). The boat is reported to have reached 40kt on sea trials. Yamaha Motor Australia said its commercial team worked closely with Woody Marine from the development stages right through to launching, “to ensure every day it spends in service it’s performing to maximum capability and offering Yamaha’s world renowed reliability.” Woody Marine also worked with a range of subcontractors to bring the…

South-west Victorian port upgrades complete

Upgrade works have been completed at a series of ports in south-west Victoria. A $1.2 million upgrade to the Portland Trawler Wharf included the extension of the purpose-built pontoon and walkway to increase space for vessels to berth at the important commercial fishing facility. Crucial works to repair the Warrnambool Breakwater have also taken place with more render repairs will be carried out by crews in coming months. At Port Fairy, $192,000 was spent on repairing and replacing timber piles to ensure the safe berthing of commercial and larger vessels including commercial charter operators and fishing vessels.…

TAFE gets refitted training vessel

TAFE Gippsland is now using a former EPA vessel to conduct maritime training. The 12m aluminium catamaran bar-ba-ka was built in 2015 and launched to support the Environmental Protection Authority’s marine monitoring program in Port Phillip Bay, Western Port, and Gippsland Lakes in April 2016. Funded to the tune of $877,000 by the Victorian Government, and replacing a boat built in 1946, the vessel has been upgraded with new water quality and navigation equipment to ensure TAFE students have access to the latest technology during their training. It will be based at the Seamac Campus and used by students in maritime courses as well as training in laboratory skills, STEM and conservation. “We are the sole provider of maritime training in Eastern Victoria and the ‘barba-ka’ will be an important…

Ferry operator SeaLink Marine and Tourism has introduced a second new catamaran into its operation in Townsville, Queensland. The 30.8m long, Incat Crowther-designed Maggie Cat is working alongside Coolgaree Cat, which entered service in late 2020 and operates between Townsville and Palm Island. Maggie Cat, however, will operate as SeaLink’s flagship to Magnetic Island. Incat Crowther says the vessels were developed in close collaboration with SeaLink, with a goal of through-life efficiency, durability, and robustness in the open waters off Townsville. The designers say that efficiency gains mean the new ferry’s fuel burn is the same as the vessel it replaces, “despite it being a more sea-capable vessel with increased amenities, including an extra sun deck and a higher passenger capacity”. SEALINK SPENDS UP IN QUEENSLAND

With eight vessels constructed in Queensland over the past five years, ferry operator SeaLink Marine & Tourism says it has invested $23 million to marine manufacturing in the state. “We are proud to be building new vessels in Queensland as we continue to be impressed by the quality of the local workmanship producing world-class vessels,” said Chief Operating Officer, Donna Gauci. New colour radar displays

Taylor Marine, the Australian agent for Furuno marine electronics, has announced the release of the Japanese manufacturer’s new Furuno colour radars. The 10.4in FR-10 and 12.1in FR-12 marine radar displays consist of a dedicated vertical display unit that Taylor Marine says can be freely combined with Furuno’s extensive DRS Series Antennas to meet a wide variety of vessel operational requirements. The radars feature technologies including Risk Visualizer, a new function that provides visual information on potential collision areas and movement of all surrounding vessels. The on-screen display provides a quick and intuitive overview of the situation around the vessel. This includes colour-coded alerts according to the threat of a collision, from green (normal) to red (hazardous), to aid assessment of the level of danger. Incat starts on world’s largest aluminium ferry

Incat Tasmania has started construction on a new 130m catamaran with the cutting of the first plate at its shipyard in Hobart. At a probable 13,000 gross registered tonnes, the 130m long, 32m wide vessel will carry 2100 passengers and 220 cars. The shipbuilder says the ship, being built as yard number Incat 096, will be world’s largest aluminium ferry. It is also the ninth vessel built for South American customer Buquebus. When the new catamaran enters service between Argentina and Uruguay, it is expected to have a maximum speed of over 40kt. WA GOVERNMENT CONTRACT FOR REGIONAL BUILDER

Albany, WA-based boatbuilder Westerberg Marine has secured a new contract with a state government agency. The Department of Biodiversity, Conservation and Attractions has ordered a 10.5m rigid inflatable boat for use in the parks and wildlife sector. Westerberg Marine has been involved in the construction and repair of aluminium boats since 1976. It was acquired by current owner and managing director Rhys Jones – a former apprentice at the company – in 2014. The design of the outboard-powered vessel is being provided by Perth-based company Alpha 1 RIBs. Established as MSJ Marine three years ago, the company adopted the new name as well as undergoing changes to share structure, office holders, and place of business in May 2021.
