As the examples show, the paradoxes work well for the late nineteenth century. This is the period Arthur Conan Doyle created one of the finest of all Lion and Unicorn combinations: brave, plodding, down-to-earth Dr John H. Watson, the sleepy leonine; and brilliant, nervous, outlandish Sherlock Holmes, the fabulous monster. It is a complementary friendship with useful literary precedents. He doesn’t even remember the year of his own marriage correctly. There is no doubt at all that he first met Miss Mary Morstan when she consulted Holmes in the late summer or early autumn of 1888 – “nearly ten years” after 3 December 1878 in her own words, though typically, Watson specifies two different months. Yet Watson places another case in the spring of that year while recalling it as taking place after he had wooed and wed Miss Morstan and left Baker Street. Charles’s three brothers were, respectively, a successful portrait painter and book illustrator, the director of the National Gallery of Ireland, and the brilliant Dicky Doyle, who designed the famous cover of Punch which graced that journal for 107 years. Nobody else had created detective fiction that won international respect, and Poe himself mixed his handful of crime and detection stories indiscriminately with tales of horror, psychological disturbance, spookiness and hair-raising peril. Possibly …but while I’m sure anybody who could identify the Don would also be able to recognise Sherlock, I doubt it’s true the other way around. Doesn’t the world know the striking classical gods and goddesses? Mercury, perhaps, with wings on his heels and helmet, and snake-entwined wand in his hand? Well … he might have been part of everyone’s mental furniture when he was the emblem of National Benzole Petrol. But since that disappeared from the filling stations and Mr Mercury dropped off the advertisement hoardings and classical education is a rarity, I suspect the kids who congregate under the Shaftesbury Memorial in Piccadilly Circus couldn’t tell Mercury from Eros.
