The Art of Poetry No. 117

I first heard Rosmarie Waldrop read when I was seventeen, visiting my elder brother at Brown. She was reading from what would become Reluctant Gravities (1999), the third book in the trilogy of prose poems later collected as Curves to the Apple (2006). I was utterly transfixed and utterly baffled. The sentences had familiar shapes—many had the arc and feel of logical propositions—and yet something strange and unaccountably beautiful had happened to them. Their vocabularies had shifted, often toward a more lyrical register, producing new arrays of music and significance while also somehow heightening my experience of grammar itself. Ron Veasey was born in 1957 in Las Vegas, Nevada. He began drawing and painting in 1981, as an early participant in the studio program at Creative Growth, a nonprofit organization founded in 1974 in Oakland, California, that supports artists with developmental disabilities, providing mentorship, materials, and gallery space. Portraiture has been Veasey’s primary mode for the past four decades. The vibrant figures of his paintings draw upon images he selects, sometimes after hours or days of searching, from photography books, fashion magazines, or National Geographic. His slow, meticulous process continues with outlines in pencil and black marker. Veasey then selects his colors, typically deviating from the source photographs. James Schuyler was born in Chicago in 1923, grew up in Washington, D.C., and East Aurora, New York, and spent most of his adult years in New York City and Southampton, Long Island. Although he is perhaps less widely known than the fellow New York School poets with whom he is associated, John Ashbery, Frank O’Hara, Barbara Guest, and Kenneth Koch, he published six full-length books of poetry during his lifetime—beginning with Freely Espousing, published by Doubleday and Paris Review Editions in 1969—as well as two novels, and a third written in collaboration with Ashbery. Lately I’d become obsessed with sewing stuffed animals. I’d seen a bear in a store and thought it was cute, so I went to a hobby shop and noticed they were selling kits that included the yarn, needles, and other little things you’d need to make them. Ayé Aton (1940–2017) was born Robert Underwood in Versailles, Kentucky. His artistic career had its start in early-sixties Chicago, where he befriended a group of older men who played checkers and discussed philosophy in Washington Park on the South Side. Aton’s interests proved esoteric, and he was directed to a man whom the group knew as Sunny Ray, who had by that time relocated to New York.
