Since early morning, a small army of volunteers has gathered here on the outskirts of Melbourne and brought this unassuming space to life, peeling, chopping and dicing their way through an Everest-sized stack of potatoes, pumpkin, sweet potato and carrots, all brimming to the top of stainless-steel cauldrons. Bushfires were raging across South Australia’s Kangaroo Island, and at their wildlife park, Dana and Sam Mitchell were receiving a succession of badly burnt koalas. “Their fur was singed and their feet were melting off. It’s a sign of Kailas Wild’s well of inner strength that even though he makes his living climbing trees and hanging from ropes in forest canopies, he’s actually petrified of heights. A deep love of koalas inspired him to conquer that fear, which is another indication of what makes this compassionate 34-year-old tick. It was only the second year the event had been run and already women were keen to test their mettle against the elements in what would become Australia’s classic blue water yacht race.
