For more than four decades, Tatler in Asia has been synonymous with status, reflecting the evolving tastes and culture of the region’s most powerful and elite. When my family acquired this wonderful media brand here nearly 15 years ago, it was true that the somewhat outdated and restrictive notion of high society that Tatler had traditionally represented was still very much alive. A year in the making, Tatler’s New Asia portfolio—featuring portraits of 117 entrepreneurs, chefs, designers, artists, financiers and musicians who are redefining the future of our region—was a production unlike anything seen before in this magazine. Some might joke that it’s “all downhill” once you’ve reached a certain age—but not Alan Lo, who took a tongue in cheek approach to his 40th birthday this January with a ski trip to Zermatt, Switzerland. He was accompanied by his wife, Yenn Wong, and some of his closest friends—including Adrian Cheng, Ivan Pun and Jonathan Cheung—who descended upon the Alps from Hong Kong, Singapore, London and Paris for the celebration. “I love ski trips, but I can’t say that I’m an expert. On January 16, Tatler Asia CEO Michel Lamunière and his wife Tamara, head of Generation T Asia, hosted a group of gourmands at The Araki, an intimate 12-seater restaurant at the historic House 1881 in Tsim Sha Tsui, where they were some of the first in Hong Kong to experience Chef Mitsuhiro Araki’s omakase. Guests included Michelle Ong, Emily Lam and Kent Ho, Gary and Katrina Liu, and Adrian Cheng. What are some dishes you have created with local ingredients? A starter of slow-cooked fish maw and bird’s nest with Japanese dashi, full of collagen and unctuous umami, topped with tender slices of succulent abalone. We kombujime (press in slices of umami-rich kelp) the hata (yellow skin tiger grouper) for a couple of hours and serve as sashimi. We also serve local red snapper as either sushi or sashimi, depending on their size. We’ll scald its skin with hot sake, then marinate it in red vinegar. He was born in Morocco and spent years in Venezuela and the US even before he attended university in France, where he would go on to a distinguished career in the Foreign Ministry that, beginning in 1980, included posts in Washington DC and India, ultimately becoming the nation’s prime minister from 2005 to 2007 under president Jacques Chirac. CHOW CHUN-FAI Painter Chow Chun-fai was one of the first artists to move into Fo Tan’s factory buildings. “Having a studio in Hong Kong has always been a luxury,” he says. “But when I graduated from Chinese University of Hong Kong in 2003, it was the middle of the Sars crisis, so it was very cheap.” Even so, he couldn’t afford a space of his own, so shared his first studio with two friends. “We used to discuss how artists in Hong Kong had reversed western art history,” he recalls. “In the west, artists would often work in a studio first, doing paintings and drawings, then [later in their career] would explore other media like installation and performance. Hybrid flags representing an amalgam of countries around the globe will be popping up at cultural hotspots across New York City this summer. These nationless, borderless images are the work of Kimsooja, who was born in Korea in 1957 and now lives between New York, Paris and Seoul, one of some 40 artists featured in the inaugural Asia Society Triennial, focusing on contemporary art from and about Asia. The Burning Question

The evolution of women’s style is a story of liberation—first from waist-cinching corsets, later from skirts and, more recently, from teetering high heels. But what’s lesser known is that several decades earlier, Frédéric Boucheron was loosening women’s chains—quite literally—through his namesake jewellery. Arguably the first contemporary jeweller to open a boutique at Paris’s Place Vendôme, Boucheron first drew his Question Mark necklaces in a sketch that dates back to 1879. The asymmetrical design was created to be worn loosely around the neck and without a clasp thanks to an ingenious spring system. Tweed has been synonymous with Chanel ever since the house’s founder popularised the fabric back in the Roaring Twenties. But despite its now indisputable repute, tweed has never appeared in Chanel’s numerous high jewellery collections. That is, until now. Gold, for instance, possesses reassuring heft and, thanks to its inert nature, is hypoallergenic. But in its unadulterated form, it’s too soft and malleable to be used in jewellery or watchmaking: it can easily lose shape or be scratched or dinged. That’s why jewellers and watchmakers have long added a dash of more rigid materials to precious metals, creating alloys of vastly improved stability and strength. The word precious may refer to something valuable, but don’t forget it can also mean fussy, finicky and difficult. Both interpretations apply when talking about precious metals. Gold, for instance, possesses reassuring heft and, thanks to its inert nature, is hypoallergenic. But in its unadulterated form, it’s too soft and malleable to be used in jewellery or watchmaking: it can easily lose shape or be scratched or dinged. That’s why jewellers and watchmakers have long added a dash of more rigid materials to precious metals, creating alloys of vastly improved stability and strength.
