She is shown at the end of March on passage down the Kiel Canal, after which she headed north along the Norwegian coast before rounding Scotland and cruising down the Irish Sea. All eyes on Bermuda event Anticipation is growing for the start of the 35th America’s Cup in Bermuda, with plenty of charter and private yachts expected to attend the event as spectator boats. The month-long festival of yacht racing begins on May 26 with the Louis Vuitton America’s Cup Qualifiers and Challenger Play-offs, culminating in the head-to-head match races in June, with defending champions Oracle Team USA led by skipper Jimmy Spithill. NOBISKRUG 80-METRE In March, the ceremonial keel laying of a new 80-metre took place at the Nobiskrug yard in Kiel. Before a gathering of the guests, an 80-ton block-section was lifted by crane into the building shed. The project’s owner brought a coin, which was placed under the keel. Once the yacht is near to completion, the coin will be retrieved and presented back to the owner for good luck. WHEN & WHERE San Francisco, February 1919 IMAGE US Naval History and Heritage Command Two sailors aboard the converted steel yacht Venetia polish the smokestack star awarded for anti-submarine activities during WWI. Built in 1904 at Hawthorne & Co, Leith, for a British owner, the 69-metre steam-powered yacht was sold in 1911 to J. D. Spreckles of San Diego. Head of a transportation empire, he leased her to the US Navy in 1917 and she set about protecting allied shipping in a number of close encounters with U-boats in the Med.
