AS ONE of the world’s top competitive Rubik’s Cube solvers, Giovanni Contardi started to get a little bored. “You get to a point where you practice months and months just to gain one-tenth of a second,” says Contardi, who can solve a cube in around seven seconds. So he found another way to channel his cube energy: creating art. The 26-year-old native of Italy has created several mosaics and portraits, including LeBron James and Kobe Bryant. (When he was a speed cuber, Gio says he was like Bryant, “practicing three, four hours a day, trying to master every single move.”) He uses a program on his iPad to map out the picture pixel by pixel, which takes at least a week. 1.Pistol Pete Maravich Played Today? ON FEBRUARY 25, 1977, New Orleans Jazz guard Pete Maravich put up 68 points on the New York Knicks. He scored on an array of hook shots, drives, and—mostly—long jump shots. But he didn’t have a single three-pointer, because the NBA hadn’t adopted the shot yet. A look at the tape from the game shows that 10 of Maravich’s 26 baskets would have either come from behind the current line or were close enough that, had it existed, the Pistol presumably would have backed up a few inches for the extra point. Most of the time rookies are rushing, so you can tell where they’re throwing the ball because they stare down their receivers. This can help you trick them with different coverages. UPERFRACTOR may sound like gibberish, but to some people it’s the sweetest word not technically in the English language. A combination of super and refractor, it describes certain shiny sports trading cards that are one-of-one—in other words, manufactured to be one-of-a-kind. One such card, the autographed Mike Trout 2009 Bowman Chrome Superfractor, made headlines last year when it sold at auction for an astonishing $3.936 million. That sale set a record that stood for about five months, when a 1952 Topps Mickey Mantle card sold for $5.2 million. Both cards far exceed the highest recorded sale of a 1909–11 T206 Honus Wagner ($3.25 million), long thought to be the rarest and most desirable baseball card. RARITY FIFTY YEARS AGO, parents threw out old comic books just like any other kind of newspaper or magazine. Kids stuck baseball cards in the spokes of their bicycles to make them sound like motorcycles. Now those same kids, all grown up, complain that they should have kept their comics and cards, which are suddely worth money. But it’s a paradox: Those cards are only so valuable because few people held onto them. Cards like the $3.9 million Mike Trout are rare because only one was ever made. WHAT HAPPENS when you cross an artist known for something he calls “brightmares” with the national pastime? You get a fun, colorful baseball card featuring Braves star Ronald Acuña Jr. flashing a horrifying grin. Last year Topps decided to go old school. The company asked 20 artists to re-create 20 of its most iconic rookie baseball cards. After the success of that program, Topps has broadened the idea to celebrate the 70th anniversary of its first set of baseball cards this year. The company asked 51 artists to reimagine old cards, combining a player and a Topps design from the archives. Which is how we ended up with Acuña appearing on a 1990 Topps card.
