When Creativity Leads

WILDLIFE ART IS the hallmark of many events, exhibitions and auctions—take for instance the annual Western Visions at National Museum of Wildlife Art each September. Alexandrea Pangburn Local aesthetic ALEXANDREA PANGBURN FELT a pull to the West from where she lived in Kentucky. Through the desert landscapes, wildlife and habitats, this self-taught artist found her true muse. Growing up with two artistic parents, 35-year-old Pangburn says art was always a part of her life. Until she moved to Colorado in 2017, though, she had no idea how all-consuming her need to create would be. She says, “I’ve always painted animals, but living here has really allowed me to home in on the local wildlife and plant-life. I fall more in love with this state every day.” Pangburn thinks big about art, like the side of a building type big. 1 TAKING THE REINS The University of Tulsa has announced Brian Lee Whisenhunt as the new executive director of the Gilcrease Museum. Whisenhunt, who assumed his duties on April 15, arrives at the museum from The Rockwell Museum in Corning, New York, where he was the executive director for the past seven years. This is a homecoming of sorts for Whisenhunt who is a Tulsa native and received his master’s degree in art history from the University of Oklahoma. Prix de West

ONE OF THE MOST eagerly anticipated events on the Western art calendar, this year’s Prix de West opens the weekend of June 7 and 8 at the National Cowboy & Western Heritage Museum in Oklahoma City. JUST AN HOUR’S drive northwest of San Antonio, Texas, is The Museum of Western Art, which dedicates itself to exploring and preserving the nation’s Western heritage through the artwork of creative individuals past and present. IN THE WORLD of sales events focusing on Western and sporting art, the Coeur d’Alene Art Auction “is the largest auction house in the genre by a wide margin,” says Mike Overby, one of three partners in the enterprise along with Stuart Johnson of Settlers West Galleries in Tucson, Arizona, and Peter Stremmel of Stremmel Gallery in Reno, Nevada. THE LA LUZ DE TAOS biennial gala and art auction supports the programming of the Couse-Sharp Historic Site (CSHS) in Taos, New Mexico. Indian Market and Festival

THE 32ND ANNUAL Indian Market and Festival at the Eiteljorg Museum in Indianapolis happens June 22 and 23 with more than 140 Native American artists participating. These creatives specialize in jewelry, pottery, basketry, sculpture and more, which gives collectors the chance to see an assortment of art in traditional and contemporary styles. Cheri Christensen

IT’S ALL ABOUT the light in Cheri Christensen’s playful paintings of farm animals. Each work is a dance of color and form through loose brushstrokes, where the creatures take center stage along with her honed techniques and individual style. “I chose animals as my subjects because I have the connection with them,” she says, “but when I am photographing them, the lighting has to be how I want it.” Christensen is always on the hunt, so to speak. She often goes driving with her camera and when the moment strikes, she can capture the image for compositional reference. This process is key for the artist because “color is relative,” she says. Broadmoor Art Experience

CREATIVITY AND CONNECTION are the underlying themes of the monthlong Broadmoor Art Experience hosted by Broadmoor Galleries in Colorado Springs, Colorado. GREG BEECHAM SAYS at times he feels as if he lives in a zoo. On a recent March morning, the artist described the creatures that form the fabric of his daily life. For example, when he had peered out his hallway window earlier, two mule deer had stared back at him through the glass. A few nights prior to that, a mountain lion had roared past his driveway; and on the way to his studio recently, a black wolf had raced in front of his pickup truck. CONNECTING PAST AND PRESENT

EVERY YEAR AT Santa Fe Indian Market, a longtime collector of Jennifer Tafoya’s pottery reminds the artist about one of the first of her pieces they purchased. Tafoya was about 13 years old and sharing a booth with her parents, acclaimed Santa Clara Pueblo potters Ray and Emily Suazo Tafoya. At the time, Tafoya was forming small animal figures from balls of clay, then polishing, firing and painting them. The piece that drew her collector’s eye was a little brontosaurus. Fast forward about 30 years to the 2023 Santa Fe Indian Market, when another dinosaur-themed piece by Tafoya caught people’s attention. The artist was introduced to bronze and patina through that experience and found his own way to interpret the medium. Bennett creates two-dimensional works using a sheet of bronze followed by etching an outline of forms—often trees and animals. He says the etching “creates a surface texture that allows the bronze to receive the chemicals.” Afterwards, Bennett applies chemicals with a brush to change the color of the bronze, creating patinas with a technique that dates to ancient Egyptians.
