Released on September 16 via Clouds Hill, the self-titled album sees guitarist Omar Rodríguez-López and singer Cedric Bixler-Zavala temper the more bombastic, proggy blow-outs that made their name, focusing instead on more concise songwriting and pop flourishes. Merseyside dark prog outfit Antimatter will release their eighth studio album, A Profusion Of Thought, via Music In Stone in November. The record is a collection of 10 tracks that were written for previous releases but left unrecorded. “These songs weren’t taken off of past albums on merit,” Antimatter linchpin Mick Moss tells Prog. “Maybe a song sounded too similar to another, or I was saying the same thing twice lyrically, or maybe a song stuck out like a sore thumb. Fans and bands alike have been counting the cost after HRH Prog XIII was postponed and its location changed. The event was originally scheduled for September 3-4 at the O2 Academy Leeds, but on August 10, with just 18 days to go, ticket holders were informed by organisers that due to “logistical and operational challenges” the show would be re-scheduled for April 14-15, 2023 at the 02 Academy Sheffield, 38 miles away. The short-notice period left many fans struggling to recoup travel and accommodation expenses. As for refunds from HRH (whose parent company is Chic Festivals), the response has been such that – according to numerous social media reports – ticket holders wanting their money back have had to resort to using their credit card company’s chargeback service. Anglo-Finnish prog metal band Wheel have signed a worldwide deal with InsideOut, and will release a new EP on November 10. The quartet (vocalist/guitarist James Lascelles, lead guitarist Jussi Turunen, bassist Aki Virta and drummer Santeri Saksala) made their debut in 2019 with the album Moving Backwards, and 2021 follow-up Resident Human brought them to wider notice. With the third album slated for release next year, the EP, Rumination, will be their first recording for their new label. Maer is the new dark folk/chamber prog project that showcases the talents of singer-songwriters Marjana Semkina (Iamthemorning) and Anna Murphy (Cellar Darling). Their debut single, Sister, will be released this autumn. Semkina tells Prog that this very magazine is at least partly responsible for the collaboration. The pair met when she and Murphy were part of the discussion panel for Prog’s female-focused #SheRocks project in 2019, hosted by our own Associate Editor, Jo Kendall. “They conveniently placed me and Anna together,” says Semkina. “We got chatting and eventually became good friends. French progressive rock giants Magma have announced that their next album, Kãrtëhl, will come out this autumn through Seventh Records. The Zeuhl band’s mastermind, drummer and co-vocalist Christian Vander, usually composes their material himself, but this release features pieces credited to singer Hervé Aknin, pianist Thierry Eliez and keyboardist Simon Goubert respectively. “Following the creation of a new line-up in 2020,” the band say in a statement, “Magma once again invited musicians to bring in their compositions, Christian Vander having never made a deliberate choice to be Magma’s sole composer. It had been decades since any of the dozens of musicians who took part in this adventure had offered a new song!” The band describe Kãrtëhl as “luminous and resolutely optimistic”, in stark contrast to its 2019 predecessor Zëss, which they say “hinted…

The self-produced follow-up to 2019’s Things As They Appear is the band’s third record with Tiger Moth Tales man Peter Jones on vocals and keyboards. Bassist and co-founder Mick Wilson says, “With a heavier sound and more aggressive approach these songs have really come alive. Most of them are about political and social division, censorship, the media, and good old-fashioned ranting!” The band, who formed in 2008, will play an album launch show on October 18 at the Old Library in Mansfield. It’s the only Red Bazar show until autumn 2023, partly due to Jones’ commitments with Francis Dunnery and Camel. UNQUESTIONABLY PROGRESSIVE BUT impossible to categorise, High Castle Teleorkestra have released one of the most berserk albums of 2022. The esoteric brainchild of Tim Smolens, former leader of genre-mashing cult crew Estradasphere, and guitarist Chris Bogen, The Egg That Never Opened is the perfect record for those who enjoy as many genres as possible, and preferably all at the same time. A restless and eccentric blur of mad ideas and eclectic instrumentation, it’s also an elaborate concept album based on a Philip K Dick novel. But, as Smolens explains, High Castle Teleorkestra sprang into life almost entirely by accident. “I’d had kids and stopped doing music for a while,” he says. “But I started again and I had a little 50s doowop project, which Chris enjoyed and wrote me an email…

Athlete were one of the more interesting indie rock bands to emerge in the early 2000s. The Londoners’ 2003 debut Vehicles And Animals was developed from ideas pooled in rehearsal, paralleling the early pioneers of prog like Yes, whose 1971 release The Yes Album was famously developed as a band in deepest Devon. While Athlete’s influences did not stem directly from such ‘classic’ prog, they did cite experimental indie outfits including Grandaddy as their inspiration. With a clear debt to The Flaming Lips, keyboardist Tim Wanstall’s sound palate was initially derived from ultra-cheap Japanese synths, enforced both by an interest in kitsch presets and a lack of funds. Based in and around Tel Aviv, the four members of Israeli prog outfit Mental Fracture started playing together in high school. But it wasn’t until a few years ago that they got serious, and this has resulted in their debut album Disaccord, which weaves together well-crafted prog rock and metal to highly promising effect. Drummer Hai Maller says that making the self-produced/-released record was akin to “building a complex and creative puzzle. It’s like our baby, we’re very proud of it.” Maller’s joined by keyboardist and vocalist Ori Mazuz, bassist Philip Tsukerman and guitarist Yogev Shpilman. Athlete were one of the more interesting indie rock bands to emerge in the early 2000s. The Londoners’ 2003 debut Vehicles And Animals was developed from ideas pooled in rehearsal, paralleling the early pioneers of prog like Yes, whose 1971 release The Yes Album was famously developed as a band in deepest Devon. While Athlete’s influences did not stem directly from such ‘classic’ prog, they did cite experimental indie outfits including Grandaddy as their inspiration. Based in and around Tel Aviv, the four members of Israeli prog outfit Mental Fracture started playing together in high school. But it wasn’t until a few years ago that they got serious, and this has resulted in their debut album Disaccord, which weaves together well-crafted prog rock and metal to highly promising effect. Drummer Hai Maller says that making the self-produced/-released record was akin to “building a complex and creative puzzle. But there’s only ever been one queen: Kate Bush. To call her a precocious talent seems guilty of gross understatement – Bush wrote The Man With The Child In His Eyes when she was just 13 years old. A cassette tape caught the ear of David Gilmour, who produced the 1975 demo that landed the youthful singer-songwriter her record deal with EMI. But Jon Field and Tony Duhig, the founder members of one of that decade’s most transcendental, idiosyncratic and largely unsung bands, Jade Warrior, met in 1962 while driving forklift trucks in a factory in Alperton, north-west London. Field played congas and other percussion, and Duhig played a guitar that his mother had bought him from a pawn shop, and they bonded over an interest in discovering music, alighting on all points between rock, blues, jazz, modernist composers such as Stravinsky, and Eastern and African music. Their last full-length, How Do We Want To Live? explored the relationship between humans and AI. Later he joined his former Exiles bandmate Merrell Fankhauser in psych unit Mu, but by 1975 he’d quit the industry, found a new life in a Christian ministry, and these days resides in Hawaii. Given that he’s had so long to write this material, perhaps it’s no surprise that Cotton’s first solo album is a baggy, rambling curio. If anything highlights what fan power can do these days, take a look at the activities of the Fruupp Facebook group, who have coordinated this release, along with a raft of other merch and releases, to help keep the Belfast proggers’ memory alive. So many great bands from the 70s deserve discovery, even 50 years after they first wowed audiences, yet beyond standard reissues (from Cherry Red in this case), vaults, if they exist, sometimes remain untouched. Masquerading With Dawn is a bootleg recording of the quintet from Friars in Aylesbury from December 1975 when Fruupp were touring their fourth and final studio album, Modern Masquerades. Dutch neo-proggers’ joyous reunion. After building a strong reputation in their native Netherlands in the 90s and early 00s, For Absent Friends went on hiatus after 2006 album Square One. But after reuniting with a new line-up for a tribute show to their founder member Rene Bacchus, they got the bug again, and on this new record there’s a re-energised buzz about them. While they drifted into soft rock territory at times in their original incarnation, this is a proudly proggy affair. Yet they also punctuate their sound with enticing melodies while still having a high old time flexing their instrumental muscles. Dave Brock has helped steer the good ship Hawkwind for more than half a century now, weathering periods of derision and indifference while always remaining resolutely unfashionable, although one wonders how much more universally venerated they’d be if they’d come from Westphalia instead of west London? We Are Looking In On You concerns itself not with such matters, inexorably juddering forwards with the same raw energy that marked them out during the 70s. This new double CD is further proof, if it were needed, that there’s plenty of life in the old bird yet. Putting the ‘chilling’ into ‘chill out’. The otherworldly timbre of the Theremin has long been used to signify the supernatural, the spacey and the downright scary. With its title taken from the Catalan word meaning to whisper, Icelandic Theremin player and cellist Hekla Magnúsdóttir’s second album summons those elements within a series of striking vignettes that glow with cinematic intensity. A graduate of the Icelandic Academy Of Art, Hekla cleaves sparsely decorated tunes out of thin air with graceful sweeps, bringing a razor-sharp focus within 10 ominous, sometimes abstract arrangements. This Colorado-based project’s debut takes a posthumously published Philip K Dick novella – Radio Free Albemuth, about a dystopian future where a corrupt populist president holds sway – as its conceptual jumping-off point. Musically, it shoehorns innumerable styles into its 40 minutes. To one generation of Genesis fans, who arrived just as Phil Collins stepped up to the microphone, Seconds Out, the 1977 live double album, featured the definitive versions of the early-career highlights. That might sound counter-intuitive, given that it saw Collins singing such Gabriel-patented classics as The Cinema Show and Firth Of Fifth, but the band found the intersection between smooth and intrepid therein and Collins was in superb voice, honouring Gabriel’s legacy while subtly introducing fresh nuances.
