Best bike from the best year

As years go, 1998 was a belter: a shedload of epic new bikes, Foggy back on top in WSB, speed cameras still only an occassional inconvenience, and we even had a bob or two in our pockets. Best of all, it was the year of the R1, the manic Yam that made the FireBlade (then lighter and more powerful than ever) feel ordinary. The YZF didn’t just take the superbike top table for itself, it kicked everyone else’s chairs out from under them on the way there. We all loved it. And we all still do. Away from the glare of the R1, there was a lot of other new metal that got us frothing too: ZX-9R, ZX-6R, VFR800, FZS600, Hornet 600, 916 SPS, RSV1000 – the list goes on.…
