Great idea! HI PAUL, further to the battery article in this month’s NZHRM, (June) attached is a pic of a battery mounting/ isolating switch option for mounting an Optima Gel battery. It worked well in my roadster and keeps the battery out of way and is easily accessible for charging/jump starting. Also keeps wife happy as still plenty of room for her numerous baggage items!!! • Panoramic Pop JOHN EVA spotted this wild, wicked and widened Ford Popular at a recent Christchurch event. Wayne and Heather Philpott of Kustom Car Club built this lil’ beast in just two years after finding the sad body with a tree growing through it. Using the original chassis, fully boxed with new x-members, 318 Mopar engine and trans, Falcon rear and Torana front ends, the body has been widened 6” at the front and 8” at the rear, and chopped 2.5” in the front and 1.5” in the rear. It’s a piece of work, going hard-out every week night and every weekend. Wayne’s pleased with his efforts, claiming the Pop rides and handles nicer than his family Pajero. • John Boy RITCHIE Malam just landed this ’31 Model A pickup via Chuck’s. It was found in the California desert near Bakersfield and has had virtually one-owner since new. Although dented here and there it still has its original paint and is totally rust-free. A great way to buy ‘em and Ritchie plans to do mechanical repairs then drive it as is! • Ticks all boxes DAVE Tuke’s ’69 RS/SS Camaro has almost all the available factory options and has just arrived via Chuck’s. Built by Gary Hansen Race Cars it features a 350 smallblock and auto, a cool houndstooth interior and orange crush paint. OBVIOUSLY steel-bodied cars of the pre 49 era in New Zealand would have history and this ‘34 pickup belonging to Pete Davies from Gisborne is one such vehicle. Pete purchased the pickup in Tauranga in 1992 but the previous owner before the one he bought it off was a chap by the name of Graeme Freeman from Christchurch. Graeme first spotted the old original pickup in Blenheim way back in January 1972, where it was well known around town. Upon visiting there again a couple of years later he was able to speak to the owner who said he was going to do it up. It then just disappeared and no one seemed to know what had happened to it. Marineland Run 2017

THE whole format of the Marineland Run/Swapmeet/Car Show is a time proven format with a different theme car each year, usually supported by fabulous Hawkes Bay sunshine. This year was no different as the usual vagabonds from Cam County and other north island destinations rolled in to Napier on Friday for the ritual get together at Marineland’s clubrooms. Registration was open and sponsor “lucky dip” products given out as well. Many of Marineland’s members were on hand to help out with directions around town and ensure things were going to go off smoothly. Plus some social drinks and tall stories are a good way to kick off any weekend. Saturday dawned bright and sunny as GMT did the official welcome before handing the reigns over to their run committee. Similar format…

Marineland Run 2017

RYAN Fuller is 26 years old and is originally from Hamilton, NZ, but for the past year or so had been living in Newman, Australia before moving to Onslow for 6 months. Unfortunately Ryan was diagnosed in July 2016 with acute lymphoblastic leukaemia. Acute Lymphoblastic leukaemia is a cancer of the blood and bone marrow. This type of cancer usually gets worse quickly if it is not treated. So the team at Waikato hospital got onto it straight away with four rounds of chemo which got him into remission and ready for a stem cell transplant which took place in Auckland hospital over November 2016. Ryan then recovered enough to return home to Hamilton in February 2017 and has been making a good recovery until a shock blood test revealed…

Pottsies & Friends Picnic Run

DAVE “Potts” Porter would’ve been proud of his run with all the fun things he liked and the theme of this run was just that: people having fun, laughing, joking, eating bacon and egg pie, picnic settings and of course, cars. A total of 88 people and 42 cars attended which was a fine effort, thank you to all the rodders who made it along. This was the first, with many more to come and next year will be even better so keep an eye out for it. Potts’ birthday was on 7th May so it was appropriate the picnic was held on this day. TWENTY apprentice lead foots entered the 2017 Junior Dragster Champs held at Meremere dragway. This national event caters for the kids of today who may become our hero racers in the future and it serves the very old adage or ‘start ‘em young’. These plucky young girls and boys learn the basics of discipline, racing, reaction times and what it takes to go racing in both DYO and heads-up trees and is a great family activity. RESULTS…

ANY dedicated Kiwi car nut will have been to the Beach Hop or has it firmly in their sights to attend. Many have been to them all and the event has a certain allure emanating from the white-sand beachside location and easy day trip for almost 40% of NZ’s population. Hot Rod Hayride Surrey, England

THE 12th edition of the Hotrod Hayride had a special feeling because it was the last time it would be held on the beautiful premises of Bisley Camp, in Brookwood, Surrey. The owner of the site has different plans and wants no more hot rod events in Bisley. But, this news did not deter the traditional hot rods and bikes enthusiasts from attending the event en masse. The event promoter, Jerry Chatabox had planned a busy schedule for the weekend. With features such as international live bands each night, live Hillbilly and Bluegrass sessions plus burlesque shows, the Demon Drome’s wall of death, a flea market, pinstriping sessions, and a soap box derby; you had no spare time! Getting there In the late ’70s Jack was working at Greenlane Speed Shop and was fortunate to have the opportunity to ride in the late Bryce Wilkinson’s show ‘n go T-bucket “Stormbringer”. Jack was instantly hooked on hot rodding and went on to build his first hot rod; a T-bucket, naturally. From there he moved on to a ’33 Ford 4-door sedan which was bright yellow and is still driving around New Plymouth today, but in its new red paint. With the arrival of a new family and its associated priorities Jack took a break for a number of years, but continued to be involved with cars on a smaller scale: models. EX-PAT Kiwi hot rodder Rhys Rogers grew up in Onehunga, Auckland and now resides in British Columbia, Canada. Back in the day Rhys had a deuce tudor which still survives today and the hot rod bug has never left his blood. Recently Rhys completed this cool ’47 Mercury tudor which came out of the province of Manitoba. It was a very good original car and almost rust-free. After a complete body-off restoration and repaint the tudor was reassembled with its original stock drivetrain, apart from the engine which is fitted with a pair of Edelbrock cylinder heads, a 4 bbl intake topped with a small Holley carb and sparked by an MSD distributor. A Crack at the Clock 2017 IHRA National Drags

A PERFECT weather map greeted racers ahead of the 2017 IHRA NZ Nationals laying the foundations for an epic weekend of brilliant drag racing. Track crews were on top of their game with superb preparation which resulted in six new national records being set plus Raymond Smyth going 200. That was contrasted by top entertainment from exhibition passes from Athol Williams on his nitro bike and also high on the achievements list was Grant Briffault who made his first 5-second pass using an engine he made himself. NELSON R&CC recently put their best foot forward and organised a Show ‘n Shine open to hot rods, street machines, muscle cars all makes of classic and collector vehicles. They got a big response from local car guys and crowds who flocked in to see the amazing variety of automobiles. At the end of the day they raised $4,000 for Nelson Hospice who were grateful for the assistance received. IT was at the 1998 NSRA Street Rod Nationals in Hamilton when I had the pleasure to get to know Graeme Cox. Coxy, as he’s popularly known was attending that event with his wife Lynne in their Jailbar pickup. TOP Down Style Sam Ferabend's 1939 Mercury Convertible

THE 1939 Mercury sedan was a fairly common sight on New Zealand roads back in the day. Not so for the convertible model which were a very rare sight indeed, but in saying that there were at least a couple of examples known to exist in NZ. This fine example is a genuine right-hand drive version which owner Sam Ferabend has spent the last 15 years restoring. The car’s early history is unknown but its future looks bright. Sam has a long history with old Fords. At one point in 1958 the Ferabend’s backyard consisted of not one but four channelled 1932 steel roadsters shared between the three brothers. Hot rods took a back seat for Sam who took up stock car racing in a fairly big way from 1958 right through…

TWENTY seven teams fronted for the annual NZHRM Club Champs. This year’s event was put forward one day and held on the Sunday following the Nostalgia Drags. That gave the Nostalgias a rain date and breather plus a better track from all the preparation put in by the Meremere team of volunteers. There were questions on how many would enter the Club Champs event given the fantastic show the day before but all concerns were quickly extinguished when 100 hot rodders started warming up for their fun in the sun. Early fog cleared and racers were blessed with perfect weather. “ABSOLUTELY” said the lady at my local post shop, when I simply asked to send a package. “Awesome”, said my son Rob when I grabbed him a beer. Those two words, absolutely and awesome, have lost a bit of impact over the last couple of decades. I used to think ‘awesome’ meant something frightening, but not these days. Awesome is the new terrific. But it absolutely fits the description of Dennis and Jan Stanley’s awesome new ’34 Ford coupe.
