FIAT 500L TREKKING WILL SPAWN A JEEP

Fiat’s crossover version of the new 500L, the 500L Trekking unveiled at the L.A. auto show, will share its platform with the subcompact Jeep SUV due in the second half of 2014. The Jeep version will have distinctive sheetmetal, and is being engineered to provide genuine off-road smarts and strong towing capability. It will be the smallest in the Jeep range, falling below the Patriot/Compass replacements, on a 105.3-inch wheelbase and about 174 inches long overall. The 500L Trekking is a 500L with extended ground clearance, plastic lower-body cladding, and off-road tires. Despite its nomenclature, the 500L is a roomy little tall wagon on a 102.8-inch wheelbase, coming to the U.S. in calendar 2013 as a five-seater. Its body shell contains a large proportion of high-strength steels for rigidity and weight efficiency.…

Kia hasn’t slowed its constant new-product assaults, and is keeping its promise of four-year cycles. At the Los Angeles International Auto Show, Kia unveiled its 2014 Forte sedan, with a design as bold as the current model Optima. Kia says it’s longer, lower, and wider, though at press time, gave no further details. It’s called the K3 in the Korean domestic market, and the influence of design chief Peter Schreyer is obvious. The car went on sale in the KDM late in 2012 and is scheduled for a first-quarter ’13 release in North America. Expect the 1.8-liter gas direct-injection four from the Hyundai Elantra to replace the 2.0- and 2.4-liter I-4s of the outgoing model. The Forte Koup will get the same kind of update later in ’13 as a ’14 model.…

ROBERT E. WHO? GM has named Robert E. Ferguson the new majordomo of its Cadillac brand. Ferguson’s “newly created position” is vice president, global Cadillac. The “global” part is wishful thinking. The new position makes Ferguson boss of Don Butler, the brand’s marketing chief, and sales and service chief Chase Hawkins. The alarming bit of news is that Ferguson has been with GM for just two years, and he doesn’t have a car guy background. He leaves Washington, D.C., for Cadillac in January after serving as the automaker’s lobbyist, hardly qualification for trying to sell the ATS in Germany and France. He spent 10 years as an AT&T executive, which is his connection with GM’s Selim Bingol and with former chairman and CEO Ed Whitacre. Bingol replaces Ferguson on Capitol Hill…

Audi’s New Small Sedan: Will there be an RS3?

Our pals at Fourtitude.com have worked up a Photoshop image of an RS version of the coming A3 sedan, based on the A3 Sportback Audi unveiled at last fall’s Paris Mondial de l’Automobile. The RS3 sedan would have 10-spoke RS4/RS5 wheels and the subtle wheel flare arches from the two newer RSes in place of the wilder flares of earlier RS cars, Fourtitude.com figures. The independent Audi news website guesses the Audi single-cell grille also will get the “frown” of the new RS5, rather than the older-style front fascia of the RS4 Avant. Audi design is working on differentiating the grille design of various RS models, and Fourtitude assumes the RS3 will adapt a bit of the limited-edition A1 Quattro’s look. Volkswagen has been looking at the segments represented by the Fiat 500X and 500L. The subcompact crossover segment is growing fast, VW chief engineer Ulrich Hackenberg acknowledged at the Paris show, with entrants such as the Nissan Juke, Ford EcoSport, Buick Encore/Opel Mokka/Chevrolet Trax, and BMW X1. “We want more SUVs, in the [Tiguan-size] and [subcompact] segments,” he says. “We’re very fast.” That means, Hackenberg says, VW could have a subcompact crossover in production in not much more than two years. Hackenberg confirms a new Tiguan will be built off the MQB components set, with a three-row version for the U.S., though the build location is undecided. ALZENAU, GERMANY—The week after Governor Jerry Brown signed a bill that makes driving autonomous cars legal in California, Google’s Anthony Levandowski said he expects his company to have them on the market in five years. The Silicon Valley Internet search engine company abruptly retrenched from the statement of its autonomous car chief, as quoted by John McElroy in AutoLine Daily. He was not available for comment to Motor Trend. Whatever Google says, the driverless car is nigh upon us. At a formal demonstration to international press of its latest Advanced Driver Assistance Systems unit technologies in Alzenau, and of its latest interior systems in nearby Babenhausen, automotive supply giant Continental outlined an aggressive agenda for driverless cars. Audi To Produce Alternative Fuels

Audi AG has jumped into the alternative fuels business. Its partner in North America is Bedford, Massachusetts-based Joule, and in Europe, it’s working with Stuttgart-based SolarFuel. With Audi, Joule is constructing a plant in Hobbs, New Mexico, that will produce synthetic ethanol and diesel bio-fuels. Joule makes these bio-fuels by combining living bacteria with CO2 and brackish water, saltwater, or wastewater. The synthetic ethanol is skimmed from the top. Joule’s diesel bio-fuel also would still require aftertreatment to meet U.S. emissions standards. After Joule finishes the new plant in 2013, Audi hopes to get the bio-fuels on the North American market and begin testing in its own fleet. Audi’s deal with SolarFuel is further along in its development. SolarFuel is constructing a plant to produce “e-gas” natural gas to fuel cars like…

For Audi, as with other automakers, the “solution” to tightening oil supplies lies in a variety of options to make the common passenger car more efficient. Audi showed off a few others at its recent technical presentation. • Plug-in hybrid An A1 e-tron two-door hatchback with a gas engine in place of the concept’s electric motor/Wankel rotary. A 1.5-liter, turbo I-3 derived from the 2.0-liter turbo four makes 127 hp and 148 lb-ft of torque. A single-speed automatic with a dog clutch connects the engine/generator and the rest of the driveline. A disc-shaped electric motor rated 67 hp/210 lb-ft works as the starter and generator, and a second electric motor, rated 114-hp and 184 lb-ft, provides traction. The internal combustion engine accelerates the A1 up to roughly 31-34 mph when the electric…

There will be no 2014 Acura ZDX. Honda’s premium division dropped that minor bombshell with a press release headed, “2013 Acura ZDX crossover to get numerous enhancements in its final model year.” The coupelike four-door crossover has a base price of $51,815. It shares its platform and many components with the larger, conventional, and much more popular MDX. There are two possible reactions toward the news. One is, “I’ve never seen a ZDX on the road.” The other is, “Acura still makes that?”Acura launched the ZDX for the 2010 model year, so its lifespan is shorter than those of the Pontiac Aztek and Saturn Sky. For the first nine months of 2012, Acura sold just 642 ZDXes in the U.S., off 47.4 percent versus the first nine months of calendar ’11.…

Volkswagen AG is reported to have put the Bentley EXP 9 and Lamborghini Urus sport/utilities on hold. The corporate board apparently is looking at conserving cash as the European automobile market continues to implode, according to a report in Automotive News Europe. This may all come down to whether large, powerful, and thirsty Bentley and Lambo crossovers would be considered too ostentatious. Luxury cars like Mercedes and Audi sedans typically continue to sell well during economic downturns, while sales of showy sports cars tend to drop off a cliff. Best ‘Best Driver’s Car’ Mail Must admit I held my breath and peeked ahead to see your “Best Driver’s Car” number-one pick. I feared Motor Trend might join the queue with all those oh-so-subjective car magazines that sheepishly tagged a Subarota as Best Something. “TO THIS SHORT LIST OF THE MOST IMPRESSIVE V-8 ENGINES, I ADD ONE MORE: AUDI’S NEW TWIN-TURBO 4.0-LITER.” Two of the most impressive V-8s to come around, um, ever, are GM’s supercharged 6.2-liter (ZR1, ZL1, CTS-V) and AMG’s twin-turbo 5.5-liter (E63, CLS63, SL63, etc.). The former, known as LS9 or LSA, offers 556 to 638 hp and 551 to 604 lb-ft of torque, while the latter, called M157, achieves 518 to 550 hp and 516 to 590 lb-ft. In a competition like Car of the Year, you’d be forgiven for thinking the diminutive Chevrolet Spark is the equivalent of bringing a wet noodle to a knife fight, but you’d also be mistaken. Whatever the little Chevy lacks in grunt (just 84 hp and 83 lb-f of torque from a 1.2-liter mill), size (93.5-inch wheelbase), and engineering excellence (drum brakes on the back wheels, held in place by a compound crank rear end), it makes up for with a big plate of charisma. As Reynolds noted, “A mildly positive mini-surprise!” We were pretty polarized by the design, with one judge who shall remain nameless calling it a “gargoyle.” That’s unfair, because the Spark is quite cute and well-sculpted for a high-roof box. We imagine the Dart will sell rings around the odd-duck Caliber it replaces. There are legions of folks who just want to get from here to there, and the Dart has one of the cooler interiors in which to do so. Dodge offers an impressive array of five interior trim styles and three different cluster designs to go with its 11 exterior colors, plus you can get a fancy 8.4-inch touch-screen boasting astute ergonomics for just over $20K. As such, the highly customizable Dart scored high in our value column. Engine output figures are competitive, but the too-heavy Dart is no rocket ship. The 1.4-liter MultiAir twin-clutch utilizes savvy gear spacing to keep the engine from falling off its power curve as happens in the manual. The stick is also topped…

The Nissan Sentra has long been considered an also-ran in the compact sedan segment. Nissan hopes it can turn things around with the 2013 Sentra by ditching its “Fast and Furious” reputation for a more professional character to appeal to the few millennials who can actually afford a new car. The Sentra targets Gen-Y-ers by focusing on three fronts: styling, space, and efficiency. It gets Nissan’s new signature grille, headlights with LED DRLs standard (a segment first, says Nissan), and LED taillights. The design was generally well-received, with Loh writing, “Making it so similar looking to the Altima is a clever idea (especially after the visual abomination the previous generation was).” Although the Sentra is narrower and shorter than before, many editors found the interior roomy, thanks to 2.3 inches of extra…

If fun were a currency, the FR-S’ return on investment would be the equivalent of buying Google stock in 2003. So readily it delivers joy to its driver, urging him (or her) to find excuses to take the long way home, to push harder through that next bend, and to savor every second of it. As a result, the FR-S is an easy car to love. Neither fun to drive nor particularly good with fuel, with a cramped back seat and a questionable interior design, the Malibu was a consistent disappointment. Lieberman even categorized it as “not so much a car as it is a collection of things I hate about rentals.” The problems? The judges’ notes go on about “lifeless” steering feel and a “thrashy” 2.5-liter inline-four. The automatic six-speed, eager to serve some kind of fuel economy deity, not only shifts to top gear as soon as it can, but also offers a huge gap between second and third gear that “lets the engine torque fall off a cliff,” said Markus. And despite these sacrifices, the Malibu’s 22/34-mpg city/hwy rating is, at best, average in class. The rear seat was tight for staffers of average height…

The Nissan Altima burst back onto the midsize sedan scene about 10 years ago with a bolder body and an available 240-hp V-6. Today, the Ford Fusion and Kia Optima are the style leaders, and Nissan isn’t the only game in town for those who want plenty of power. Where does that leave the 2013 Altima sedan? In a good place, actually. By the numbers, the Altima sedan is a compelling package. The four-cylinder model is quick for the segment, and for now, the car is the class leader for mileage, with EPA ratings at 27/38 mpg city/highway. Unlike the Ford Fusion, Chevrolet Malibu, Kia Optima, and Hyundai Sonata, the Altima still offers a traditional V-6 that, as with the I-4, is mated to a new CVT. The new-for-2013 Honda Accord…

Take a look at this CODA. What do you see? Most judges saw a curious throwback to the 1990s when Asian sedans—that is, Japanese sedans—seemed to draw design inspiration from cardboard boxes. Well, the CODA’s bones are indeed boxy, and old, though its shape actually dates to only 2004 (it was sold as a gas car starting in 2005). Moreover, the hand behind its angles was no less than the house of Pininfarina, a concern that knows how to pen gracefully aging cars. Some judges saw a primitive-looking EV arriving too late in a nascent market segment awash with way too many expensive, sub-100-mile-range BEVs. Were we judging OCOTY (Orange Car of the Year), the Toyota Prius C would be a front-runner. The Habanero Orange color maximizes the four-door hatchback’s cheap and cheerful appeal. But how cheap is the new compact Prius variant, really? The $20,000 base model doesn’t include cruise control or 60/40 split-folding rear seats with adjustable headrests, but you do get Bluetooth, a USB port, a 3.5-inch customizable information screen, and, of course, an EPA-rated 53 mpg city. That figure is unparalleled by any non-electrified vehicle, though the regular Prius does match the Prius C’s 50 mpg combined. For better or worse, the Prius C features a wilder interior design. Many testers couldn’t ignore the smaller Prius’ multiple textures and curves. “It looks like someone’s taken a razor blade to the interior of…

The C-word came up again and again when the judges started talking about the merits of the Acura ILX compact. No, not that C-word, but one that’s sure to make Acura’s product planners cringe: Civic. “Drives like what it is—a tarted-up Civic,” said Jurnecka. “Nice interior, but I’d take a loaded Civic and keep the change,” opined Loh. “The Acura ILX is what the Honda Civic should have been, but at a Civic price,” declared Theodore. But the ILX does have its strengths, especially the model with Honda’s 201-hp, 2.4-liter I-4 and six-speed manual combo also powering—you guessed it—the Civic Si. Hyundai’s all-new Azera targets the near-luxury D-segment currently occupied by Toyota Avalon and Buick LaCrosse. It received high marks for content and packaging efficiency, but polarized our judges with its interior and exterior styling. Floyd praised the car’s telematics/nav package and “comfortable, first-rate cabin layout,” while guest judge Theodore called out the Azera’s “roomy package, huge trunk” and “luxurious mocha leather interior.” Theodore also found the exterior upscale, “if not adventuresome,” which ran counter to MacKenzie’s findings. “It has dramatic styling that’s trying too hard; interior is Gangnam-style Asian techno-fusion,” he said. “Not the progression the previous Azera was, which shows that the better you get, the harder you have to try.” One area Hyundai engineers need to address is handling, although a little perspective is required, said Floyd. “For the…

If there’s one problem with the new Lexus ES, it’s the Toyota Avalon. A look through our notebooks reveals nothing but ES-Avalon comparisons: “Why would anyone get this over the new Avalon?” wrote Loh. “Not nearly as satisfying a mid-lux cush sedan as the Toyota Avalon,” Lassa said. Why the Avalon comparison? For 2013, the Lexus ES ditches its Camry connection for a platform related to the reworked Avalon in an effort to achieve LS-levels of comfort. The Lexus gains 1.7 inches of wheelbase and another inch of overall length in switching to the Avalon’s platform, boosting ever-important rear legroom by 4.1 inches. Aside from the additional legroom, Lexus added the clunky Remote Touch Interface to the infotainment system, upscale touches like available bamboo trim (300h only), and high-quality interior materials…

It’s been more than two decades since the first Lexus LS was introduced to the U.S. market, bringing with it game-changing dynamics, features, and value. The original LS was significant enough to make the best from Europe stand up and take notice, and that success was echoed in sales volume. We were hoping for another big step up with the 2013 LS. Lexus has the brains, money, and experience to build a car that wows the flagship luxury segment, and the previous generation car didn’t represent the best the brand could do. The particular SL Mercedes-Benz provided us was a 550, meaning it was powered by the 4.7-liter, 429-hp V-8. Which, after driving it, darkly reminded us of its ominous 518-hp, SL63 AMG big brother. Dark? Ominous? Why am I using words like that? Ask M-B, which has been building a string of sporting cars with way more horsepower than handling poise (excepting the wonderfully anomalous C63 AMG, which gets it completely right). The SL550 was astonishingly difficult to drive at its limit, a modern-day 1937 W125 Grand Prix car in need of a Rudi Caracciola to hypnotize it around a fast corner. Me? Not being a 1930s German Grand Prix driver, I was struggling to control it around our figure-eight course, with things ultimately getting so out of hand that its…

Our judges wrote more notes explaining their decision not to grant this Fusion our Golden Calipers than they did weighing the virtues of the Porsche 911. Many struck a defensive tone that spoke to the high expectations for this stylishly redesigned returning champ (2010). How could it lose? On paper, it takes all the things we loved about 2010’s major mid-cycle enhancement and upgrades them with Aston Rapide looks. No other midsizer offers a choice of four engines, four transmissions, front- or all-wheel drive, and regular or plug-in hybrid. Nearly every interior dimension is increased, bringing 5 cubic feet more usable passenger space, and almost everyone noted how well the new car stifles road and wind noise. And of the 1.6-liter manual Sport version Loh gushed that the steering offered…

Of the 45 cars on hand for the 2013 COTY competition, not a single one was more important in the marketplace than this ninth-generation Honda Accord. And in its last couple of generations, the Accord has become a confused car amid a flurry of rapidly improving or all-new sedans such as the Sonata, Optima, Passat, and Fusion. The man ultimately in crosshairs is Honda’s CEO, Takanobu Ito. How has he fared? The tip-off that Honda is thinking freshly again is the Accord’s length, which is 3.5 inches shorter. Shorter! That’s not the natural longer-lower-wider course of things (incidentally, it’s because Honda felt the Accord was becoming difficult to fit into garages). The Accord returns as a sedan and coupe, fitted with an all-new, direct-injection “Earth Dreams” four- and revised six-cylinder engines. But…

With the possible exception of Toyota’s excellent new Avalon, the big surprise of this year’s contest was the Ford C-Max Hybrid. Our crew wasn’t expecting a rock-solid hybrid that not only made it to the finals, but received several second- and third-place votes. Seabaugh summed up the C-Max’s attributes thusly: “It’s as if a Ford Focus and Escape had a ménage à trois with a Toyota Prius and the best of each made it into the C-Max. It has the Focus’ fun-to-drive bones, the Escape’s utility, and the Prius’ fuel efficiency.” Let’s start with how well it drives. Said Floyd, “This car glides over the road in EV mode, wonderfully balanced ride for a top-heavy-looking vehicle. Wind noise and other cabin intrusions are kept to a minimum.” MacKenzie added, “Michelin Energy…

Buick is building the world’s best Buicks again, so for 2013, the new Toyota Avalon has aimed itself at becoming the world’s best front-drive Lexus. Sounds like a Zen koan. And Toyota seems to be going for a Zen-like atmosphere, or at least some good, old-fashioned feng shui. Avalon is an all-out comfort-mobile with rich interior textures and an expressive (for Toyota) exterior design. Even with its remarkable, 85-kW-hr battery, the Model S’ EPA-certified 265-mile range is about 100 miles short of spanning California’s two biggest cities. And if you can’t manage that, how would you ever get to New York? To answer that, Tesla recently unveiled the first five of what it calls its Supercharger stations along routes connecting L.A. to Las Vegas and San Francisco, and S.F. to Reno. (A sixth is located at SpaceX’s Hawthorne factory.) These Superchargers are veritable electron fire hoses, delivering DC energy directly into the battery at rates up to 80 kW, bypassing the on-board 10-kW (or optional 20-kW) inverter(s), and gaining 150 to 160 miles in range in 30 minutes. First things first. Aston Martin should change the name of its brand-new automobile from Vanquish to Big Sexy. There are a couple reasons why, besides the “just look at it!” obvious. Vanquish just isn’t a proper Aston name. Yeah, it sounds similar to Vantage, Volante, and Virage, but it has a meaning in English. A very undignified, chest-thumping meaning. The name’s intent is too telegraphed, too immediate. Moreover, Aston chairman Ulrich Bez is German, and, as a result, comically pronounces the name of the car as “Wankwish.” I say if your CEO can’t properly pronounce your flagship, it’s time for a name change. Four of the original seven tunnels built for the abandoned South Pennsylvania Railroad in the late 1800s are part of today’s Pennsylvania Turnpike.
