IN THE 3RD GRADE I was convinced that going to a prep school would lead me to greatness. As part of the application I needed a teacher recommendation. In big capital letters, where the teacher was given space for comments, the only thing she wrote was “UNORGANIZED.” I got in anyway. The thing about that recommendation is that she wasn't wrong. She still isn't wrong. It wasn't until my senior year of high school that I was diagnosed with ADHD. My life had come to a turning point after my father died. I completely shut down. Which came First Guitar Effects or Rock ‘n’ Roll?

IT COULD BE THAT GUITAR EFFECTS helped invent Rock ‘n’ Roll. In the big band era of the 1920s to 1940s, trumpets and trombones were often lead instruments. Piano held both rhythm and melody while guitar strummed in the background hardly noticed. When the first amplifiers emerged in the 1930s, they gave the guitar a chance to be heard. This dynamic new technology soon provided the guitar with a palette of voices we call “effects.” Around 1945, Sister Rosetta Tharpe, the “Godmother of Rock and Roll,” adjusted her amplifier to get a warm fuzzy distortion sound. Powerful Planthoppers

INSECTS REALLY HAVE IT GOING ON! Silk from worms, honey from bees, and all the amazing colors of butterflies and beetles. And then, here comes the planthopper. This is the only species identified that has tiny gears aligning its hind legs. More accurately, only baby planthopper nymphs sport these “training wheels'’ to help them jump properly. Why does an insect need help aligning its legs in the first place? It's about speed. Malcolm Burrows, a Cambridge zoologist, explains in the journal Science, “They're going incredibly fast. Hi! When I was a kid, my dad had a pedal car — like a soapbox car but fancier. His was shiny red and made of metal. He'd sit in the hild-sized seat, push the pedals to make the three wheels go, and off he went. For a kid, it felt like driving a real car!
