What equipment you need depends on where you plan to go. Here, John Pearson separates it into three categories: essential, desirable and luxury

There’s camping, and then there’s camping. A week on a well-equipped French campsite with heated shower block and its own shop, bar and restaurant is an entirely different proposition to a fortnight in the desolation of Western Sahara – and the kit you take with you has to reflect that. On my 2018 Aussie adventure I cooked most nights, often on a campfire in the outback – but when on an LRO Adventure Club trip through Morocco later in the year we mostly ate at inexpensive auberges at campsites, only cooking on a handful of nights. Another consideration is the amount of weight you want – or have the payload –to carry on board. Land Rovers are willing workhorses, but hauling unnecessary weight will cause extra stress on the vehicle…
