When KOL Social launched back in 2019, we could never have imagined the dramatic events and changes just over the horizon. The devastating effects of the pandemic aside, diversity and inclusion became the ‘new black’ for mainstream organisations and finally we were being heard. Has that helped KOL Social? Maybe. Enlightened gatekeepers, for the most part, are no longer shutting their doors on us. They’ve done the maths: it does not make economic sense. But let’s not forget that you were there with us before the Black pound mattered to blinkered industries and at a time when print was often declared dead. Soul legend Marvin Gaye’s stream of smash-hit songs throughout the 1960s had rightly seen the singer crowned as the Prince of Motown. By the end of that decade, his iconic standards, such as I Heard It Through the Grapevine, had not only helped propel Detroit-based record label Motown to become America’s largest Black-owned company but – thanks to its crossover success – play a crucial role in the racial integration of popular music in a country in the throes of the civil rights movement. LA-based photographer Gregory Prescott has mastered the skill of sensuously capturing the curves of a woman: the fullness of her lips, the textures of her hair, the grace in the extension of her arms. In men, he might catch the broadness of the back, signs of struggle in the shoulders, perhaps a look of steely determination in the eyes. That he manages to capture all the sensual and sculptural aspects of the human form without straying into blatant sexual imagery is a skill few photographers manage to achieve – Prescott appears to do so effortlessly.
