Aneglected home has been given an incredible new lease on life with a sustainable renovation. When they discovered the property, designers Tylah and Dylan from The Haus envisioned how they could turn it into a healthy and energy-efficient dwelling that would serve them well for years to come. Dylan is a Passivhaus builder and the couple wanted to not only create their forever home, but to also use it when complete to showcase to others how the principles work, and how they too could build the same way. Rylock x Destination Living: a closer look at Hartlands Road

Built on the edge of the Southern Ocean, Wave House is a beachside abode originally constructed in the 1980s. Graceful yet unconventional, the home was built on a budget using modest materials such as corrugated iron, weatherboards, timber and metal. With intersecting curvilinear rooflines, curved internal ceilings and exaggerated geometric highlight windows, Wave House had a sound structure, but a heavily outdated, chaotic interior. Idyllically located in regional Victoria, this collaborative project was inspired by a group visit to the freshly excavated site where builder Hedger Constructions met with the architect, interior designer, landscape designer and clients to inform the narrative of the build. “The group discussed the strength, yet gentleness, of the surrounding hills and how this should be reflected in the design, materials and plant selections,” explains Steven Hedger, director of Hedger Constructions. “From this we aligned on the optimal orientation and spatial organisation for the site, material approach, colour palette and the home’s integration with the surrounding landscape.” The residence, situated within a private golf course, is designed for Melbourne-based clients as a “lock and leave” country retreat. Bushfire season doesn’t stand a chance against Paarhammer’s Bushfire Safe Range. The owners of this property, picturesquely nestled in the highest Bushfire Attack Level — Flame Zone (BAL-FZ), wanted to create a welcoming residence surrounded by nature. The resplendent rural retreat was designed by Robertson Collectif Architects, who overhauled the original home into a hospitable house that could cater to its retired owners, as well as their family and friends during extended visits and special occasions. This remarkable and unique two-storey home is a beautiful, charming, and undeniably quirky breath of fresh air.
