58/4/1: Regarding the Elgin half-a-horse In response to Marissa’s letter to Flywheel Forum (57/6/3) in GEM October/November 2022: I have owned a couple of these engines. It is a desirable engine for folks who collect small engines. I am not sure of the age, but I believe they date back to the late-teens or early ’20s. The only application I have ever seen is on washing machines. It is unusual to find these engines complete with a switch, carburetor, buzz coil and muffler. This engine appears to be complete, except for the muffler. I have never seen a parts or operating manual for one. If the engine is loose, it would be worth $300 to me. POWER HOUSE ANNEX CIRCA 1913-1915 STANDARD Company Standard Motor Construction Co, Jersey City, N.J Year 1913-1915 Serial Number 29478 Bore 4-inch Stroke 5-inch Owner Paul Harvey This engine is a Standard auxiliary engine built by the Standard Motor Construction Co. of Jersey City, New Jersey. The Standard was designed by Carl Carlos Riotte when he formed the firm in 1895. He is known for designing the first 4-cycle, 6-cylinder marine engine. His engines were well-designed and balanced to sustain the continuous use they endured. The engine supplied all of the auxiliary services on World War I submarine chasers; this particular engine served as the source of electrical power, as an air compressor, and as a combined bilge and fire pump. Addendum to Voltage Value

As was pointed out in my previous article (due to meter short comings), reading the output voltage of a magneto while spinning it up provides no useful information on the health of the magneto. The output of the magneto is short pulses of voltage, in the range of 70v to 100v, that are too narrow for any meter to read. Additionally the frequency is well below what is readable by standard meters. The 5v to 12v typical meter reading is simply the meter’s “stab in the dark” at a voltage it cannot read. March 2015 is a month I will never forget. This was by far the most fun several of my family members and I have ever had acquiring a gas engine. I was offered the opportunity to purchase a gas engine, however, we had to get it out of a basement that was four stories underground. The adventure begins In the beginning of March, I received an email in regards to an engine for sale. According to the email there were no identifying marks on the engine, they just wanted it gone. The featured gas engines for the Midwest Old Threshers Reunion in Mount Pleasant, Iowa, for 2023 are inverted engines. What is an inverted engine? The Merriam-Webster dictionary defines an inverted engine as “an engine whose crankshaft is above the cylinder.” It also could be described as an engine that sits on its head. An inverted engine is an upside-down version of the common vertical engine style seen at shows. Inverted engine designs date back to the earliest versions of engines produced. Back in the day, these engines were described as vertical engines since the cylinder was vertically arranged. Many early engine builders used the inverted design, but all referred to it as a vertical engine. Unidentified Upright

I have an unidentified small air-cooled 4-cycle, singlecylinder gas engine. It is a neat upright engine, about the size of a 1920s F series Briggs & Stratton. I received the engine with no carburetor, fuel mixer/fuel tank, muffler or cooling fan. It has a small German Bosch magneto with “FB1C” on one side and “B36-228” on the other. The magneto is driven directly by the crankshaft and the best part is it works well. A grooved pulley on the crank shaft has a notch cut into it for rope starting. It has three round steel pegs protruding, which I presume is part of a flexible coupling. It looks to be original. I had a stuck and rusty Briggs & Stratton from which I took the fuel mixer and muffler and added…
