The description of ‘product’ is so broad – it encompasses everything from a single object to spatial relationships between multiple objects. NO better place to take the temperature of design than Milan. Introduced as a showcase for innovative products from Italy’s furniture industry, the Salone del Mobile has evolved over a period of nearly 55 years into a global marketplace, a breeding ground for young talent, a platform for branding and – if you like – a hotbed of discussion on and around design. (Most of the analysis and debate takes place in the city’s bars and restaurants.) Major movements originate in Milan. ‘The photoshoot with Klaus opened my eyes to a strange world I didn’t know existed. His work inspired me to shoot a little personal project quite different from my usual work.’ Originally a news and documentary photographer, Bristol-based Gareth Iwan Jones now specializes in portraits. ‘Through the speculative combination of materials and the transference of traditional processes of fabrication into innovative contexts, surprising results are achieved.’ The words are those of Dr Markus Holzbach, professor at the University of Art and Design Offenbach (HfG). Having viewed the presentation of the school’s recently founded Institute of Materialdesign IMD at Ventura Lambrate in Milan, for which HfG collaborated with BMW AG, we have to agree with the professor. The abstract experience of chronological momentum gains physical form in Time Over Time, an experimental project by ‘designer-maker’ Dawn Haleta that illustrates the effects of light on dichroic glass. Displayed as part of an exhibition by design collective All Things in Between, Haleta’s sculptural pieces comprise layers of glass and metallic oxides that react to variations in both natural and artificial light. Arriving at the Fiera Milano – jam-packed with people and products – we wonder the same thing every year: how much new stuff do we actually need? This April, though, the abundance of new releases at the annual furniture fair was counterbalanced, at least in part, by the mountain of reissues, thus validating the quality of existing products. Addressing the challenges of global population growth, Mariah Wright, a master’s student enrolled in CSM’s Material Futures programme, developed Crop Constructs, a project that analyses the potential of genetically modified crops for food production. For her research into this highly controversial topic, Wright took an approach similar to that of Carole Collet, who initiated the academic programme and who based her Biolace project on the possible use of synthetic biology to ‘reprogram plants into multi-purpose factories’. Wright started with ten important food crops – among which coffee, soy, wheat and rice – and devised various scenarios for their production. She envisions ‘carnivorous wheat’ growing in Kansas, ‘toxicity-sensing rice’ produced in China and ‘ready-packaged strawberries’ cultivated in California. Upholstered seating arrangements dominate the outdoor-furniture scene, as brands give their offerings all the comforts of a snug living room. Making the most of the new trend, Extremis presents Lionel Doyen’s Bundle Swing 1. Based on Doyen’s love of nature, the swing has a frame of aluminium tubes that are wrapped in straps of acrylic fabric: the design represents a bundle of ‘random branches found in the woods’. As the traditional light bulb gradually becomes an emblem of the past, Marcel Wanders taps into the liberating character of LED technology with Space-Frame 1 for Moooi. This was made evident by creative collective Out for Space, which presented Karuun – a reinvention of rattan – at Salone Satellite 2015. FOR60 years, Klaus Kemp has been perfecting the once-forgotten art of diatom arranging. Using a microscope slide as a canvas, he shapes complex geometric patterns using diatoms – intricately beautiful microorganisms that are invisible to the naked eye. Born in Berlin, Kemp was just ten years old when he moved to the UK in 1948, in the wake of the Second World War. He encountered diatoms a few years later through his work for a scientific-supplies company and was instantly hooked. LISTENINGto Michelle Evans talk is strangely captivating. It’s got something to do with her accent, which does provide clues to her origins, but as we chat in the lobby of the Mercure Hotel in London’s upwardly mobile Southwark, I find it impossible to place – and with good reason. Although the founder of rug company Ayka Design, who also creates the interiors of luxury hotels, may have been brought up in Llanelli, a town in southwest Wales, she’s had a nomadic career that has taken her from Birmingham to Brunei and from Zimbabwe to Los Angeles. XIANGYANG — No fewer than 500 rectangular ‘fins’ feature in a 5000-m2 landscape installation that rises from a plaza on the outskirts of Xiangyang, a city in the Chinese province of Hubei. Chris Pecht and Dayong Sun of Beijing-based office Penda cite the rolling contours of surrounding hills and the verticality of nearby trees as inspiration for their huge ‘sound wave’, whose uprights vary in height from 2 to 13 m. The striking project, for which Penda won a 2013 competition, forms the entrance to a large public area known as Myrtle Tree Garden. HONG KONG — The use of a hybrid of traditional fabrics, objects and styles to produce a new classic describes Japanese fashion designer Chitose Abe’s concept for her latest capsule collection, as well as her label’s first independent store. Situated on Hong Kong’s dynamic, high-end On Lan Street – in the mazelike inner city – the Sacai store is a reflection of its surroundings. The brand’s creative team extended the pavement into the shop, along with the vibrant urban atmosphere; translated the verticality of nearby skyscrapers into double-height ceilings; and interpreted the neighbourhood’s erratic network of streets and alleys as a retail environment of ‘rooms’ and passages. With the inauguration of a new store on Via Sant’Andrea, Maison Margiela played a major part in the flurry. The two-storey space at the heart of Milan’s historical fashion quarter, Quadrilatero della Moda, retains the minimalism for which the avant-garde brand is known, while also emanating an aura of mystery and drama. PARIS — The heart of many a bookworm will go aflutter at the sight of Sonia Rykiel’s upgraded Parisian flagship. More than 50,000 books fill the store’s floor-to-ceiling bookcases, among which an impressive selection of classics from the French canon. The city’s 6th arrondissement, Saint-Germain-des-Prés, was once the creative hotbed of Paris, where philosophers and writers met in the many literary cafés that dotted the area. TOKYO — Unlike most artisanal Belgian chocolates, which come in a diversity of shapes and sizes temptingly encased in foil, BbyB chocolate bars are packaged as identical ingot-like squares. Available in Ginza at a new shop – the brainchild of Michelin two-star chef Bart Desmidt – the bars come in sets of five, which fill hundreds of slim plastic boxes colour-coded to indicate the different BbyB flavours: no fewer than 28 varieties at the moment. LYON — Musée des Confluences was conceived as a ‘medium for the transfer of knowledge’ rather than as a showroom for the 2.2 million objects in its collection, and accessibility is a key theme of Coop Himmelb(l)au’s layout. The Austrian architecture firm divided the building into three parts: the Crystal, the Cloud and the Plinth, which contain entrance foyer, exhibition spaces, and auditoriums and workshops, respectively. Coop Himmelb(l)au describes the Cloud as ‘an immense spaceship, stowed temporarily in present time and place’, but also as a spatial experiment intended ‘to stimulate public curiosity’. As daylight does not penetrate the Cloud’s exhibition spaces, this part of the museum has a distinctly nocturnal atmosphere. LONDON — You’re shopping for shoes in a dense fog, but it’s neither a London fog nor the fog of doubt. It’s a smart room-size mirror covering three walls whose cottony white surfaces clear – with the help of a Kinect sensor – only when the glass captures shoppers’ moving reflections. This Galeria Melissa, was designed by Brazilian Muti Randolph, who did the brand’s highly mutable São Paulo flagship (Frame 51, p. 98) and whose dynamic spaces often react to temporary input: the presence of people, sound or light. He uses bespoke software, technologies and content to build evocative environments that are more than visually monolithic; visitors feel transported, their senses and emotions guided or even overwhelmed by the surroundings. LONDON — ‘One of the main ideas was about the essence of perfume – the chemistry that goes into it,’ says Dean Pike, cofounder of up-and-coming architecture practice Al-Jawad Pike. He’s describing the thinking behind the firm’s inventive shop window for high-end perfumer Penhaligon’s. Rather than opting for a simple presentation of products, the studio designed and built twin lattices made from copper piping – 120 m in total – that hold more than 150 glass flasks, each containing one of the raw ingredients that go into the 32 fragrances available at Penhaligon’s. PARIS — When architect Federico Masotto set out to refurbish the interior of a high-end juice bar in the heart of the French capital, he took the raw ingredients of the delicious juices on the menu as his point of departure, to which he added a multicoloured, show-stopping granite counter: the pivot of his design. ‘My clients wanted the space to have a strong identity that would highlight the quality of their fruit juices,’ says Masotto. ‘They asked me to design a big marble counter – an open workspace of sorts – to be placed at the centre of the room. BAKEWELL — It’s safe to say that Make Yourself Comfortable at Chatsworth is a mixed bag, but the star of the show is undoubtedly one of two commissioned installations. Endgrain by Raw Edges takes over the entire Sculpture Gallery, picking up the pattern of mosaic panels that decorate the pedestals of some of the venerable works permanently on display. Benches and seats appear to grow out of a grid-like timber floor that is reminiscent of a De Stijl painting. STOCKHOLM — Sweden’s capital is home to Acne, the fashion brand whose audacious outlets bring a blush to the cheeks of the retail industry. Acne’s latest offspring is part of Nordiska Kompaniet, Stockholm’s illustrious department store. According to the Swedish clothing label, the concept that led to this shop-in-shop represents the next generation of Acne Studios boutiques. Keeping in mind the high-profile Acne interiors that have bowled us over in the past, we hear ‘next generation’ and are curious, to say the least. Our first glimpse of the store is reassuring, but it also dampens any far-fetched expectations we might have had. The 120-m2 shop makes a strong impression, but no more than that. He’s emphasizing the common thread that runs through the work done by his Hong Kong design firm, whose latest scheme – the Yue restaurant in Chengdu – paints an abstract picture that tells ‘the story of a traditional Chinese landscape painting’. Reflecting the changing perspectives that appear in such masterpieces, the interior of the fusion restaurant offers a multi-perspective experience. LISBON — The first move towards the design and realization of the EPAL Water Museum was made in the 1950s, after boilers at the former Barbadinhos Steam Pumping Station in Lisbon had been demolished. The museum opened in 1987, and the initial permanent collection was on display until the end of 2013, when renovations begun. Winner of a closed competition organized by Portuguese water company EPAL was local outfit P-06 Atelier, which came up with the best solution for the redesign of an existing exhibition space for the permanent collection. The room required a total update with a focus on improved accessibility. The concept is emerging not only in high-fashion collections (men dressed like women and models of both sexes wearing the same outfits) and at boutiques that invite straight couples to browse through the same racks; just turn on the TV to find reality series based on transgender celebs and dramas like Transparent, featuring Maura-cum-Mort. In London, Selfridges offered a platform to British creative Faye Toogood, who filled it with a collection of gender-blurred designs. She called her shop-in-shop Agender. It wasn’t the first time that Toogood had dived into the unisex pool: the ‘manifesto’ of her outerwear line, Collection 002, speaks of ‘a liberating mode that is available to all, male and female’. She will tell you the materials that hold her works together, the references she draws upon in her research, the architecture she observes in the process, the history that absorbs her, even the philosophical thoughts that drive her, but – publicly, anyway – what the culmination stands for? High-fashion house Prada, headed by Miuccia Prada, was already developing a different kind of strategy in 2001, collaborating with the architects at OMA/AMO in Rotterdam and with Herzog & de Meuron in Basel. ‘PEOPLE enter a fantasy world when they enter a cinema, so for us that’s an opportunity to do something really spectacular. What if the cinema itself could be just as dramatic as a movie set?’ Virginia Lung, codirector of Hong Kong-based office One Plus Partnership, knows what she’s talking about. I like to think they reference a good old friend – the original Sigg bottle – because they look very simple and inconspicuous, despite the high-tech complexity that went into their development. The bottles are democratic in price and readily available. They restrict the overuse of PET bottles. The original Sigg bottle is an icon; it makes the brand. If we talk about a future with less stuff, Ikea almost symbolizes the antithesis of this utopia. How many times have we heard someone say they need a cheap thingumabob for the house? But what happens when a giant takes on the design world? Yet as recently as 17 April, a leading Brooklyn-based manufacturer of 3D printers blogged: ‘We at MakerBot are re-organizing our business. It is aided in part by a new approach to design-thinking that’s been adopted by certain areas of the science and technology communities. The problem-solving aspect of this new methodology encourages specialists in such fields to deprogramme habitual attitudes and to embrace a disruptive model of creative learning. In order to tackle complex issues, they have to be willing to open their minds to the know-how available in a wide range of disciplines. The two most recent offerings gave visitors exactly what they were craving after a week of walking around and looking at static pieces on display: interactivity. Delirious Home from 2014 featured cuddly cacti and motion-tracking clocks among its engaging objects (Frame 99, p. 136), whereas students this year tackled the selfie phenomenon. Online furniture producer Opendesk calls itself an ‘accommodating yet agnostic platform for open making’ and a ‘validating’ link that connects consumers, designers and makers. Covering all aspects of the cross-fertilization process, Opendesk is a global resource that works locally, fitting out offices, for example. It provides access to open-source software, operates via social media and maintains a network of stakeholders: those with ideas and those with production facilities. Making temperature control design-savvy is no small feat, but embedding it within furniture is something else. Architect and engineer Raphaël Ménard teamed up with designer Jean-Sébastien Lagrange to do just that. Their Zero Energy Furniture project uses phase-change materials (PCMs) that allow a table to double as a climate regulator. ‘If you want to insulate a house, you probably need €20,000,’ says Ménard. ‘Our dream is that one day you’ll be able to go to Ikea and buy a €59 table – or a €39 curtain – that helps to solve energy problems.’ Normally used in walls and suspended ceilings, the PCM wax that Ménard and Lagrange sandwiched between the upper surface of the table and the aluminium underside absorbs excess heat from the room and releases it when the…

With partners like Boffi, Kos and Zucchetti, it comes as no surprise that their work has made a palpable impact on the market. The Palombas’ thin-walled, elegantly shaped sinks became almost instant classics, and their more recent designs, such as outdoor wellness pavilions, continue to push the envelope. IN1952 Heinrich Bette cofounded the bathroom company that was to bear his name. The firm experienced a turnabout at the end of the 1960s, when steel underwent what current managing partner Thilo Pahl describes as an ‘industrial revolution’. Technology imported from the automotive sector reduced the production time of a bathtub from hours to a matter of minutes. Unlike its competitors, Bette couldn’t afford to invest in new presses, but to prevent the company’s demise, Heinrich and his partner invented their own version. Today, the press is still in operation. As a mechanical engineer, Thilo Pahl revels in the fact that Bette has its own tool shop, which enables the company to tackle any challenge a designer presents. A hexagonal bath? Since 1993 the company has grown from humble beginnings in a Zurich student flat into a brand seen and loved the world over. Daniel Freitag, who founded the company together with his brother Markus, remembers those first days fondly. ‘The production facility was the flat my brother shared with two friends. Before cutting the belts, he heated the knife on the kitchen stove, and he washed the tarps in the bathtub. From Flax To Furniture INher search for environmentally friendly alternatives to passé plastics, Christien Meindertsma made a chair from flax and PLA, a bioplastic material: 100 per cent biodegradable, cleverly constructed and practical. To achieve what she had in mind, the Dutch designer teamed up with Enkev, a company specializing in natural fibres for use in the mattress and automotive industries, among others. ‘Flax is my favourite material,’ says Meindertsma, who once bought a flax farmer’s entire crop for a research project. In order to work with bio-based PLA and to avoid the use of chemicals, she needed a fresh approach to the design of the chair and a new composite material. The design team at El Equipo Creativo – Oliver Franz Schmidt, Natali Canas del Pozo and Lucas Echeveste Lacy – made that question the starting point for Disfrutar, a fashionable new restaurant in Eixample, a district of Barcelona. El Equipo Creativo’s cache of hospitality projects includes a handful of imaginative and eye-catching designs for the Adrià brothers (of El Bulli fame) and other leading chefs known for avant-garde Catalan cuisine.
