There’s much to look forward to this winter, ploughing season’s underway, the Newark Vintage Tractor & Heritage Show takes place in November and many clubs are starting their winter programme. Elsewhere our youngsters look to their futures, heading into further education, or starting apprenticeships. Recently I have been amazed to see quite young children driving tractors at various agricultural and other shows, they certainly haven’t looked old enough to hold a licence to do so. As well as being concerned about the safety implications I also believe tractor drivers should hold the appropriate driving licence and insurance to drive a tractor anywhere with public access, (e.g. a public place). Working in agriculture I know that stringent regulations cover youngsters driving tractors, under current UK legislation it’s illegal for children under…

FORDSONS AT LEEDER SALE

The late Chris Leeder sale at Long Stratton, Norfolk takes place on Saturday 5 October with Clarke and Simpson director James Durrant leading his team at this fine sale. The Leeder family were and still are extensive farmers with their classic Ford low hours fleet. Each part of the family had so many acres, but they farmed together and had a tractor for each purpose on the farm. Chris liked all things mechanical he started collecting in the 1970s. Fordson and later Ford are what the farm always used and there are some fine examples here from a County E27N CFT Perkins P6 crawler with lights, to an original wheeled E27N P6 TA KWG474. Over the weekend of 17-18 August, the Weald and Downland Museum near Goodwood, West Sussex (where TV’s Repair Shop is made) held their working weekend. It featured a very original 1919 Fordson F from the Mansi collection with Albion binder. Also in operation was the Mansi family’s Fordson E27N Perkins P6, everyone had a great time at the event and was very much appreciated by all involved. FORD MAN WINS WPC IN ESTONIA

The World Ploughing Championship took place on 16-17 August and the Republic of Ireland was to take both titles yet again! 40 competitors from across the globe took part in this prestigious event. European Reversible Ploughing Champion Jer Coakley who uses a classic Ford at the head end is a tillage and drystock farmer in his daily life. He went on to show why he is top of the furrow, when on grassland he was in first place and was to stamp his authority again on the stubble the following day. This quite naturally gave him the World Championship His college and multiple champion Eamonn Tracey had to work hard to retain his conventional title when only fourth on the first day, but he was the master of the stubble…

An impressive line-up of Countys stole the show at the 42nd Three Cocks Steam & Vintage Rally held at Boatside Farm, Hay on Wye, Powys, Wales on Sunday 11th August organised by the Three Cocks Vintage Society. The rally was opened by new president and founder member, Margaret James. In her speech Margaret recounted how the Society was formed with the inaugural rally in 1978 as the assembled steam engines blew their whistles in the parade ring says Anne Bates. There were 23 County’s the most seen together in one place in the UK this year and they had come from within a 40-mile radius of the rally site from Leominster, New Radnor and Llanidloes to name but a few. The oldest were a pair of County CFTs both fitted…

IT’S A FORDSON MAJOR UNDERNEATH!

The highlight at the Rural Times Past Rally at Horns Cross, near Bodiam, East Sussex on 10-11 August was this Motor Ibérica Ebro 460. This Spanish tractor had connections with Ford who built Fordsons here starting in 1920. However, Ford Motor Co sold out in 1954 while Franco was leading his ruthless regime. The new Nationalised company carried on with Fordson tractor derived products until 1980 when Nissan Motor Co. bought them. In the latter 60s the company modernised its tractors using its MF connection to clad Red Giants’ 100 series panels on an E1A Major skid unit! This type of tractor was known as an Ebro 513 later 460, 640, 6100, 8135 and so on, by then they were owned by Kubota. The Ebro, not in the best of…

Everything is set for the 2024 Newark Vintage Tractor Show on 9-10 November, although exhibitors are clearly concerned about organisers charging them to camp at the show, going by the number of emails, Facebook and WhatsApp comments we’ve received. For the third time in the 73-year history of the event, the county of Nottinghamshire will host the 2024 British National Ploughing Championships. Thoresby Farming has kindly provided a site on their estate at Perlethorpe, near Ollerton, Nottinghamshire on 12-13 October. Dubbed the FW range, standing for Four Wheel Drive, these tractors gave Ford a foothold in this popular sector of the North American marketplace that it had never had a presence in before. This was followed up in 1979 by a new range of tractors given the TW moniker and built by Ford themselves. Collecting model tractors is a pastime that crosses generations and countries. It’s a hobby shared by both young and old, where rare models can fetch almost as much as the real thing, but just a few pounds can buy a child hours of enjoyment in world of farming make believe. You have only to attend a specialist toy auction or toy fair to see how popular farm models have become, and here in the UK one company has dominated the market since the 1920’s, although their origins are far removed from the world of farming. Designated the E27N the first Fordson Major rolled off the Dagenham production line on the 19 March 1945, a few weeks before World War II ended in Europe on May 8, 1945, the War in the Pacific continued until Japan’s formal surrender on September 2, 1945. The Ford Motor Company wanted to build a tractor with a redesigned engine, more features and a progressive look, but that was put on hold. The British Government wanted a smooth production transition between the old and new model. Hence the unsophisticated, but no nonsense, Fordson Major was launched. Out went the old Fordson worm drive and in came an oil immersed single plate clutch, which operated a crown wheel and spiral-bevel pinion to improve the transmission which provided three forward and one reverse…

Max Kellner is in the Groundworks and Excavations business, having built up his own successful company over the last few years. THE FORD 6X PROJECT

PART 1 Back in March 1961, less than ten years after the launch of the first of Fordson’s E1A series of tractors at The Smithfield Show in December 1951, plans were being made to create a new Ford range of tractors. Under the direction of Robert Hampson Ford Tractor Operations was set up as a joint project between the USA and UK to develop a worldwide 6X range of tractors to bear the Ford name. Led by product manager Scott Rumely, with input from the American and UK Ford tractor divisions, by October 1961 the concept, shape and specifications of the range had progressed to enough to decide on three models, a 30hp 2000, 44hp 300 and a 56hp 5000. PART 9 As the bottom part of the engine was now pretty much complete, I now wanted to get the cylinder head in a condition to fit. When I stripped the engine down initially, I was always of the opinion that maybe a new cylinder head would be a better way forward. Before I committed myself to buying a new one, I decided to strip this original cylinder head down first. Starting at the front of the cylinder head I began to remove the thermostat housing. I removed the top section first that was held on by a couple of bolts, once this was off the first thing I noticed was the lack of a thermostat. We are delighted to announce that Nick Bryne has agreed to be our representative for Somerset. Nick and family are well known in the vintage tractor world and have been involved with the Association for many years. My first memory was the AGM held at Ditcheat back in November 2007 – a very cold winter. Nick, along with wife Pat and sons Matthew and Tom are members of the South Somerset Agricultural Preservation Club too and own many pre 1962 tractors including model N’s, F’s and E27N’s, some if not all of which have won awards over the years. MEMBERS NEWS & REPORTS: Carrington tractor road run – Easter Saturday March 30th 2024

The 9.30 start was from Lincs Aviation Heritage Centre, the home of Just Jane the Lancaster bomber, that is undergoing a ten-year restoration project to get her airworthy again. Some 75 tractors and 125 people took part in this popular annual event with proceeds of £1,275 going to the LRSN (Lincolnshire Rural Support network) charity. The morning run of 14 miles was led by Malcom Robinson who took us into the Lincolnshire Wolds, down some lovely little lanes with daffodils along the banks, this area of Lincolnshire is not the flat fenland that people expect to find! The well-planned route took us through many villages such as Old Bolingbroke, Hameringham and Greetham where the residents were keen to come out and give us a wave! We arrived at our lunch…

CHICKERELL STEAM AND VINTAGE SHOW - WEYMOUTH, DORSET 6-7 JULY

Just over half a mile from the coast, what a windswept weekend. Although, we did dodge the showers, our first gazebo gave up the ghost on the first day, so we had to borrow one for the Sunday. A very well attended show as far as tractors were concerned, 96 listed, but I’m sure there were other late runners too. A good diverse spread across all classes of transport and the good weather combined with many trade stands guaranteed a heavy footfall on both days. Ivor James, “tractor royalty” commentator certainly had his work cut out for himself giving an informative commentary on the arena tractor parades on both days. A very well renovated David Brown 990 deservedly won the best tractor class. Next stop is to the east of…

CARRINGTON STEAM & HERITAGE SHOW - SATURDAY 25TH – 27TH MAY

This year’s show celebrated the twentieth anniversary of the Ford and Fordson Club along with the theme of sugar beet harvesting. The build up to the show included an auction and car boot sale on the Saturday, which always draws in a good crowd. As expected, the weather gave the organisers some challenges, with no movements on site on the Thursday before the show and on the Monday of the show, movement was kept to a minimum, to allow exhibitors to get out in the evening. The weather did not deter the public, who arrived in their droves to enjoy the event with some 300 tractors, many stalls and a great FFA stand organised by John Vowell with some 67 tractors participating. There were some very rare and interesting exhibits…

The 12-14 July saw the return of the Pilford show, near Wimborne, Dorset. Although hot on the heels of the Chickerell show and just before Netley Marsh, Southampton, this event sees many different tractors exhibited. A friendly show, it is not the most heavily advertised show in the south, but the quality was apparent. A Steiger built Ford FW30 romping around the arena was a site to behold and a pristine County 1174 graced the line-up. Three trips into the arena over the weekend with informative commentary by Robson James (Ivor’s son)) and John Scott. Our Ford and Fordson flag flew and many chats with local members were enjoyed. Held 21st of July, Phil Gibson reports. Roy Cowgill and I attended his local rally at the Ayr auction Market site, this was the first time back for me since Covid. We were outnumbered on the show field by an excellent turn out of Masseys, now I have to own up to wanting a particular Massey, a 175 Multi Power, there was one on site totally original with very low hours but not for sale so I’m still only Blue. On our stand we had Jim Davidsons Silver Jubilee, a 5610 and a 7610 owned by David Harvey, the 5610 was his fathers which he sold long ago, David by chance found it and was able to buy it back and carried out an excellent restoration to it. I last travelled to Orkney in 2017 as part of my round Britian tractor run and told them I would be back, seven years later I was at their yearly rally in Kirkwall, the furthest North FFA have been in the UK. Liaising with member Steven Metcalf who I think is the Islands Mr Fix it for anything tractors, he gave me a prime spot in the tractor area with all makes around me. Their theme was anything Massey, a lot of them with period implements. Once again, I bring you greetings from Alberta on this the longest day of the year, June 21---hard to believe 2024 is almost half over. Yes, it’s true, I’m finding as one grows older, seemingly time simply slips by so much faster! Thankfully after a record mild winter with virtually no snow, spring moisture conditions were much more favourable for crop seeding which also resulted in diminished forest fire risk unlike this time last year when huge swaths throughout the country were inundated resulting in dense smoke even reaching Western Europe. However, temperatures here have been much below average in the meantime resulting in crop conditions being backward by roughly 3 weeks compared to seasonal averages. During a holiday in Denmark, I visited the “Denmark’s Ferguson Museum”, a collection of 250 tractors and other (farm) vehicles which – based on the museum website – would be the biggest collection of Ferguson tractors in the world being open to the public. Starting with a tractor conversion of a Ford T from 1919 to remind the fact of Harry Ferguson putting a plough after his Ford T, the museum gives a magnificent overview of the history of mechanisation of farming through an unbelievable collection of grey and red Fergies and more recent Massey Ferguson tractors and implements. The collection includes many special models or equipment, like vineyard and industrial versions, French and US variants, a Ferguson with an electrical motor, a tandem version, etc. but also combines, snow…

COUNTY’S STAR AT CONTINENTAL ENCOUNTER I’ve attended this event ‘off and on’ since 1989 and it’s been the mainland’s number one tractor preservation event for many years. It could be a three-day event really, but it operates just over the weekend and this year it all took place over 27-28 July. I joined friends Des Boughton and Mick Blunt from the UK who drove me there, which made a change from being in the driving seat.
