Keep Dune Buggies Alive in Texas!

Today, most enthusiats simply call us “hot VWs Magazine”; yet, our official magazine name remains “dune buggies and hot VWs Magazine”. However, I am not sure how many people remember that our publication originally started as “Dune Buggies the Fun Car Journal” in 1967. In the early stages of our magazine's life, the content of each issue pretty much revolved around buggy and off-road stuff. But we slowly included more street and drag race car features; so, in the April 1970 issue, “and hot VWs” was added to the magazine title - it therefore became “dune buggies and hot VWs Magazine.” Just eight months later, the “hot VWs” letter size became larger than “dune buggies.” Since the July 1971 issue, it became and is still today’s logo format that we…

Here is my combo: 1776 cc motor with 40x35.5mm 042 heads, single hi-rev springs, Scat lifters, Engle W-110 grind cam, .430 valve lift, 284-degree duration; intake opens 19, exhaust closes 12; intake closes 48, exhaust opens 55; gross cam lift 397, duration @ .050 247, lobe centers 108, lash .004, Autocraft solid shafts with swivels. Is it normal to have a significant clatter with this setup? This is a strong running engine, that also uses dual Dellorto carbs. Other components inclde: Brazilian case, Demello c/w crank. I heard the issue occurs with some cams and lifters. Yes, I agree: Any Volkswagen looks good lowered and equipped with Porsche Fuchs wheels. But it’s so outplayed nowadays. Not only in Germany, but around the world! I remember the late ’80s-early ’90s, when there were no Fuchs “repops”. Even back then, people said “Everybody is running Fuchs wheels. That’s boring.” In Germany it was really difficult to get road-legal aftermarket wheels, especially all those desired 8 spokes and Riviera alloys from overseas. Sure, we had ATS, Pedrini and Mahle rims, but they weren’t exactly easy to get and they were just regular European wheels. And we all wanted the cool American stuff! The size of the motor is the combination of bore and stroke. So, what is a good size to have? Let’s talk about the two. BORE: There is stock for a 1600. 85.5mm. Great bore size. 87mm slip-in. Not my favorite. The ID of the bore is 87mm, yet the OD is the same size as the 85.5 so as you can see the thickness of the cylinder wall is thinner. Here in Redding where it’s hot as hell in the summer, what you gain in horsepower is not worth what you lose in reliability. What does thinner cylinder walls have to do with reliability? Adjusting “multi-finger” diaphragm clutches.

It’s no surprise to many VW owners that some VW pressure plates don’t last as long as expected. After only a few thousand miles, they may begin to slip, chatter, or fail completely. This can hold true for most “multi-finger” diaphragm clutches like the Sachs Amortex (Brazil), Luk, and the Kennedy Stage 1, 2, and 3, and other copies of the Kennedy design. While the design is not as forgiving as the original German Sachs “3-finger” design, It’s not always the fault of the pressure plate itself. Let me explain. If you read your Robert Bentley “Official Service Manual” that covers 1970 to 1979 Bug models, it will tell you to adjust your clutch cable until you have about 10 to 20mm (3/8 to 3/4 inches) of free play before it…

A fun thing to collect is VW literature. There is a wide variety of literature, from VW sales brochures to magazine ads to books, to period photographs. Old photos are great to look at. This month I will share some of my favorite places to find period pictures of Buses. A couple of years back, my friend and local antique and historical enthusiast, Justinian, bought the archives of a sign shop which included photos of Buses, featuring painted logos. Our eye-candy for this month is one of those Buses. It is a late 1957 or 1958 Double Door panel. The Beetle has more wins in the Baja 1000 than any other model of vehicle! Last November, hundreds of racers and thousands of motorsport fans gathered in Mexico for the running of the 50th BF Goodrich Tires SCORE Baja 1000, one of the most grueling and demanding races on the planet. As always, the race will feature “Baja Bugs”—modified Volkswagen Beetle vehicles—as well as Spartan racers using Beetle running gear that have shown their mettle across the deserts for five decades and counting in both Mexico and the U.S. The first race, known then as the Mexican 1000, was held on Oct. 31, 1967, running between Tijuana and La Paz. A big Congratulations to Patrick Downs of CB Performance for setting the East Coast PRA Pro Stock ET record and taking a trophy home, after winning the Fast Times at Farmington #28 race in North Carolina. Pat and his greatest supporter/crew chief, Mike Herbert of Rancho Performance Trans-axles, towed Pat’s Pro Stock race Bug and drove coast-to-coast, making it to Farmington Dragway in Mocksville, NC to participate in the South Eastern VW Association drag race event. At the end of race day, Pat was still busy competing. In the final round, he met Ollie Frey from Virginia and set a new ECPRA Pro Stock 1/8-mile record: 5.901 ET at 117.25mph top speed (1/8th mile race). The Mille Miglia is a 1,000-plus mile rally, which takes place annually in Italy – this year marked the 90th event. It’s been a huge part of the country’s rich motorsport history since 1927, and still draws massive crowds today. It starts in Brescia, Northern Italy, then heads down the East side of the country to Rome, before heading back up the Western side to Brescia again, all in just four days. Caleb is now 16 years of age and a junior in high school. When I saw Lee's Type 181, it had 737 miles on the odometer, since new. Low mileage cars such as this are amazing in their ability to show just what our vintage vehicles looked like when they rolled off the assembly line. The car was purchased new from Triangle Volkswagen in Durham, North Carolina on June 20, 1975 by a couple who planned to use it for winter driving. North Carolina winters worthy of driving the car were few and far between. Therefore few miles were put on the car, with it mostly being used as a tailgate vehicle for UNC Football games in Chapel Hill, about 12 miles roundtrip from their home. Several coachbuilders had close ties with Volkswagen during the 1950s, from Dannenhauer & Stauss and Denzel, to Beutler and the subject of our story, Rometsch. These European companies used engines, gearboxes, floor pans and other VW components, to create vehicles with daring lines, such as the Rometsch Beeskow. The 1957 example seen here belongs to Scott R. Bosés, whose love for Vee Dubs and Porsches can be traced back to the ’60s, thanks in part to a 1958 Porsche Speedster purchased for 2,000 dollars – that’s about the price of two decent original 356 bumpers today. The official start of the cruise begins in Grass Valley, a small mining town in the heart of California’s Gold Country, a special place to visit in its own right. The group of about 90 air- and water-cooled VWs headed out, traveling on mostly backroads, with only one super slap transition. The group meandered their way up in altitude along the beautiful South Yuba river. Average cruising speed about 40 mph, no one in a hurry because around every corner brings another scenic “Ahhhhhh”.
