Linda Kastiel Kozlowski, the founder of Comfort for Critters, was in her local animal shelter adopting the meowing ball of fuzz when she noticed the rest of the homeless pets in their enclosures. Emily Selby of Clinton Township, Michigan, loves to go “garbage picking” with her mom. “This was one of our best finds,” she says of the outdated cabinet they discovered sitting on a curb. “With a limited budget, I am always looking for ways to update without breaking the bank.” Emily enjoys showing others how chalk paint can transform a piece, and this project was no exception. He is rugged, strong, brave and most likely a white man. In the days of the old American West, though, Black cowboys made up an estimated one-quarter of the wranglers, riders and ropers. FLAG WALL HANGING WHAT YOU’LL NEED 4 22-in.-sq. red bandannas 3 22-in.-sq. white bandannas 1 22-in.-sq. blue bandanna Coordinating thread 26 in. dowel rod Twine 13 star-shaped lapel pins Scissors Sewing machine Straight pins Iron DIRECTIONS 1 Wash and dry bandannas. 2 Cut red and white bandannas into 5-in.-wide strips. Sew 2 red strips together at short end. Repeat with remaining red pieces for 7 long red strips. Repeat with white pieces for 6 long strips. 3 Fold 1 ½ in. of raw edge of each strip to back and press in place, leaving 2-in.-wide strip. 4 Fold 3 in. of each strip over the dowel rod and pin in place with straight pins, alternating red and white stripes. 5 Fold blue bandanna to match width of 7 stripes (approximately 14 in.). Until I got married and moved from the city to the country, I had never heard of a summer kitchen or a “Hoosier.” But as a new farm wife, I quickly learned that almost every old farmhouse—including the one I had just moved into—had a summer kitchen with a Hoosier cabinet, in addition to the larger kitchen inside the house. Those summer kitchens were treasured by their owners. They usually housed a sink, a stove, a table and chairs, and a Hoosier, a multipurpose cabinet often referred to as a mother’s helper. Years ago we lived in a beautiful parsonage that sat on a hill above the neighboring catfish farms. It was a lovely house, but it was not quite as tight as we might have hoped. Neighbors would often ask if we knew that when the house was built, a rattlesnake had found its way in. And then, several years later, we came home to find a snakeskin at the front door—but we never found its owner. This versatile carrier can work for a range of casserole dishes. Cut 2 prewashed, corresponding fabrics to 23-in. squares. Cut a piece of reflective, insulated batting, such as Insul-Bright, to the same size. Layer 1 fabric, right-side up, on top of batting. Pin a 7-in. piece of 1-in.-wide webbing at 1 corner, 1 ½ in. from the corner point. Pin other end 1 ½ in. down the other side of the point, creating a loop. Repeat on opposite corner.
