Clay shooting is back! I was at Westfield for one of the first CPSA registered shoots following lockdown – and it was fantastic to see literally hundreds of shooters out enjoying their sport once again, albeit under the new guidelines designed to prevent spreading the virus. The CPSA and shooting grounds have worked hard to come up with a system that meets the guidelines while still getting shooters round the course smoothly and efficiently, without feeling rushed or spending ages queuing. They have done a grand job – the 100 Fitasc and 100 Sporting at Westfield ran like clockwork, with shooters following the social distancing rules where they went round in pairs. CPSA Registered competitions are up and running at shooting grounds in England, complying with Covid-19 regulations to minimise any risks. The Clay Shooting Company and Podimore were among the first to run Registered shoots in early June, closely followed by EJ Churchill and others. Clay shooting had recommenced in England on 14 May after the CPSA and other shooting organisations got the assurances they needed from government and police, as well as confirmation from their insurers that members would be fully insured when shooting. The association issued comprehensive guidance on how to comply with Covid-19 regulations and advice, with a document entitled ‘Shoot Safe, Stay Safe’. Grounds in Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland had to wait for their restrictions to be lifted. Shooting was limited to no more than two…

The CPSA continued to support shooters during the Coronavirus lockdown, in a reduced capacity as we had to cancel many Championships and suspend CPSA Registered Shoots. It was good to see influential figures in the sport step forward to show their support for the clay-shooting community, as several volunteered to do a series of videos that we posted on social media to entertain and inform shooters whilst they were stuck at home. Some of these featured top shots such as Russell Mark, James Bradley-Day, Abbey Ling, Derrick Mein and many others talking about kit, wins, and advice to aspiring shooters. Back to business at West London

The first post-lockdown shots were fired at West London Shooting School on Thursday 21 May, when instructor-manager Mark Heath took out his first client since the ground closed for the Covid-19 pandemic. Initially the ground was open for limited lessons and practice rounds. WLSS planned a phased and safe opening of the school. They conducted a full risk appraisal and put protocols in place to ensure the safety of both clients and staff in line with guidelines from the CPSA and the Government. Clay shooting is proving popular with freemasons, and the five-year-old National Association of Masonic Clay Shooting Societies reports that it plans to hold its second international competition at the Scottish National Shooting Centre at Falkirk in October, “pandemic permitting.” The association’s first international was held last year at Doveridge, attracted 124 entries, and was won by England, with Scotland second and Wales third. NAMCSS secretary Roger Wilkes explains that the masonic shooting is organised by counties, which are known as ‘Masonic Provinces,’ and there are now 28 Provinces in the association, with a further six being associate members while they form their provincial branches. “Each year there is a National Competition hosted by one of the member provinces, also several inter-regional competitions where the provinces shoot against each other. WHY I SHOOT A KRIEGHOFF

“This gun had been in a fire, but survived the hellish temperatures.” I starting shooting a Krieghoff back in 2007. I had started my shooting career with a Winchester 6500, a 12-bore with 28in barrels. My husband John wanted a new left handed K80 Super Sporter, so we took a trip to visit Haggis Hartman at West Country Guns – where I fell in love with a 30in K80 Super Sporter myself. This particular gun had apparently been in a house fire, but the K80 action had stood up to the hellish temperatures and survived. HOW TO BALANCE YOUR GUN

We found the best way to balance our K80’s – firstly, place the gun safely on a pivot, put a bit of masking tape on the action so you can mark where the current pivot point is, and measure the distance from hinge pin to pivot point. To make the gun less barrel heavy, we then add weight into the stock. The K80 does not come equipped with any barrel or stock weights, so we did it ourselves. Take off the butt pad– you will see the hole where the stock bolt lives. Using a small bag, fill it with 2-3 shot shells of lead after having removed the actual lead shot from the cartridge. I was pleased to see the return of Maionchi cartridges – and several of my clay shooting pals felt likewise. Back in the 1980s Maionchi was a leading choice among club shooters and serious competitors alike. They achieved a keen following because the cartridges performed very well indeed and were keenly priced too. It’s relatively easy to make ‘budget’ cartridges, but there is a special knack to making cartridges that perform to a high standard without charging a premium price – that’s where Maionchi fitted into the market back in their heyday. The cartridge world has changed since then, and has become ultra-competitive. HAND-EYE COORDINATION

In shooting, your brain receives information from the eyes, processes it, and uses that information to guide the actions of the hands. That’s what allows us to move the gun and pull the trigger in the right place. We are simultaneously using cognitive and motor skills to read the flight of the target and move to it accurately. It’s called hand-eye coordination – the ability to use the eyes and hands simultaneously to complete a task. If we can develop that ability, we can shoot more accurately and consistently. One of the most common questions I was asked during the lockdown period is “what can I do to improve my eyes or keep them tuned up for when I return to shooting?” Shotgun shooters have always been interested in the latest cartridge, choke or coloured lens, but this shows that more people are thinking about how to enhance their own personal performance, rather than just relying on purchasing more expensive kit. Having ‘perfect eyes’ won’t make you a perfect shooter, but vision and shooting are intrinsically linked; the accuracy with which you see the target dictates how you make the move to shoot it, and the coordination and synchronicity of your eye muscle system is linked to how repeatable that ‘pair dead’ becomes. It was another boring month sat in lockdown, the second since this whole fiasco started. My life consisted of college work, eating, the occasional bit of exercise and sleeping. And then the CPSA announced that shooting grounds could begin to reopen – and that changed everything! They posted on Instagram after the government announced the change in restrictions, and as soon as I saw that I knew that it would only be a matter of time before I could get the gun out again and do some actual shooting instead of just dry mount practice. ESCAPE AT LAST!

It’s one of the hardest things to get to grips with in shotgun shooting: understanding first what the target is actually doing, and then how you and your gun working together can hit it consistently to increase your score and your average. The first part of this is knowing where your gun is shooting at set distances of 25 yards and 45 yards with the cartridge and chokes you would normally use. This needs to be done on a pattern plate with sound professional help from someone who really understands how you shoot as an individual and the type of shooting or discipline you are going to want to do. As I write this article we are in May and it looks like we are going to be under restrictions for a lot longer. Boris Johnson has announced that the lockdown won’t be lifted at a stroke; instead the government will ease the restrictions gradually. Personally I think that’s wise in the circumstances. Like everyone in the sport, I was really hoping we were going to be given the opportunity to leave our homes and enjoy the smell of cartridge smoke and the sound of gun fire – but at the time of writing we must hold out a little longer. Of course we are also faced with the situation being slightly different in each of the home countries. Writing this article at the end of May, shooting grounds have been able to reopen in England, but not in Wales, Scotland or Northern Ireland. There is much work being done by shooting grounds to enable them to reopen. Guidance documents have had to be prepared, measures put in place to ensure safety, and assessment paperwork completed.
