Visitors had to enter through a gatehouse and get permission from the guards to go inside. Castles were built to keep the people who lived inside safe from enemies. The castles in fairy tales are usually pretend but there are many real-life castles in Europe, Asia and Egypt! Some royal families still live in castles and some old castles are used as museums. There once was a farmer who had three sons. The farmer was old and very ill. He wanted to make sure his farm was taken care of, so he gathered his sons around him. He told them, “The farm will belong to you now. And if you work hard, you will find a treasure hidden in the crops. A treasure of gold.” The three sons were surprised to hear this. A treasure!
