Services suspended after staff threatened Eskom temporarily suspended its services to Harare in Khayelitsha after extortionists attempted to shake down its contractors for protection fees. In a statement, Eskom announced it had withdrawn its services from the community with immediate effect in response to threats and intimidation tactics by alleged gangsters who were harassing its employees for not paying them monies to be in the area. Eskom acting general manager Mbulelo Yedwa said gangsters were insisting operators leave or pay R20 000 a month, and that criminals were breaking down essential infrastructure to create opportunities to shake down residents to be reconnected for R30. “We have also been made aware that there’s a syndicate illegally connecting people for R1500 per household. Communicare loses eviction case, vows to appeal court ruling

The Cape Town Magistrate’s Court has ruled against social housing giant Communicare in an eviction case due to rent arrears that morphed into a question of the ownership of some of its properties. In March last year, after a challenge from tenants, Communicare was forced to release a statement detailing the history of how it came to be in its present form since apartheid times. It said it had officially changed its name via the registrar of companies in 1964, from Citizens’ Housing League Utility Company to Citizens’ Housing League. It went through another name change to the Housing League, and finally in 1990 to Communicare. LONG-distance bus company Intercape has been left reeling after another attack on its buses in Cape Town. Two Intercape bus drivers came under attack Wednesday evening while driving from the company’s depot in Airport Industria to Cape Town Station to load passengers. According to Intercape, the incidents occurred within moments of each other on the N2 highway near Nyanga, just before the Jakes Gerwel off-ramp. Intercape spokesperson Lindiz van Zilla said in the first incident, the driver was shot and wounded. He was travelling with his assistants at the time of the incident. The four Uitsig men accused of operating as part of a gang appeared in the Western Cape High Court where the alleged leader testified in his defence. Vincent Davids, pointed out in court as the man who shot and killed Glenda Ruiters, 56, while she was at home, told the court yesterday the witness’s version “doesn’t exist”. Davids appeared with family members Dawnay Davids, Mahlubandile Jacobs and Moegamat Swarts who said he too had no knowledge of the events that led to the allegations against him. Tazne van Wyk suffered “severe blows” to the head, neck and chest when she was killed. Moyhdian Pangkaeker yesterday appeared in the Western Cape High Court where an expert testified as to how little Tazne, 8, had died. Pangkaeker, 56, is facing 27 counts of murder, kidnapping, rape, incest, sexual assault, sexual exploitation of a child, sexual grooming of a child, desecration of a corpse and absconding from community corrections. About 22 civil society organisations have raised concerns about the shrinking civil space and in an open letter called on President Cyril Ramaphosa to hold officials who threaten such organisations to account. SOUTH Africa recorded one death as a result of a Covid-19 vaccination, the SA Health Products and Regulatory Authority (Sahpra) said. Sahpra and the National Department of Health provided an update on Adverse Events Following Immunisation (AEFIs) at a media briefing yesterday. Health Minister Dr Joe Phaahla said an AEFI is any untoward medical event which follows immunisation and does not necessarily have a causal relationship with the use of the vaccine. Watchdog hits at police over ‘inefficiencies’

The effectiveness of police has again been questioned after Community Safety and Police Oversight MEC Reagen Allen said that in a space of three months, 198 cases served before court were withdrawn as a result of inefficiencies by police in the Western Cape. This was found in the quarterly report by the Department of Community Safety’s Court Watching Brief team, a unit Allen said they established to bolster police oversight as mandated by section 206 (3) of the Constitution. Eighty-five cases were withdrawn due to the dockets not being at court, 80 withdrawn due to the investigation being incomplete, 21 withdrawn due to the accused not being brought to court, eight withdrawn due to the witnesses not being subpoenaed, and four withdrawn due to forensic reports being outstanding. WHO says healthy life expectancy in Africa rising

HEALTHY life expectancy in Africa increased on average 10 years per person between 2 000 and 2019, a World Health Organization (WHO) assessment report has shown. The WHO said the rise was greater than in any other region of the world during the same period. The report also noted that the disruptive impact of the Covid-19 pandemic could threaten these huge gains. The Tracking Universal Health Coverage in the WHO African Region 2022 report showed healthy life expectancy – or the number of years an individual is in a good state of health – increased to 56 years in 2019, against 46 in 2000. The Muslim Judicial Council (MJC) and the Al-Waagah Institute for the Deaf have signed what has been called a historic partnership in an effort to benefit those in the deaf community. Al-Waagah is the only deaf Islamic institution in Cape Town. The partnership will formalise a working relationship between the two organisations. The two most significant risk factors linked to a relative and absolute five-year chance of acquiring any cancer are older age and smoking, according to a recent major study conducted by scientists at the American Cancer Society (ACS). The findings of the research were published in the journal Cancer. But he didn’t mention the country’s ability to protect its energy infrastructure as a prerequisite to any solution. We argued that Eskom was the target of hybrid warfare operations aimed at destabilising South Africa’s national power generation capability. Artisanal gold mining is out of control

Illegal and unregulated artisanal gold mining in the Witwatersrand Basin in Gauteng is an increasing threat to community, industrial and state security. Reports on turf wars between rival gangs, or shoot-outs between illegal miners and security officers are commonplace. But recent incidents point to a spike in the scale of illegal activity, conflict and criminality. Taariq Fielies admits Mamelodi Sundowns’ ace sharpshooter Peter Shalulile “is an absolute beast”, but the Cape Town City central defender is confident they can keep the champions at bay in today’s Premiership season opener at DHL Stadium (7:.0pm kick-off). The smiles were back on the faces of the Proteas players as they ended their tour to England with a resounding 10-wicket victory over a hapless Sri Lanka at Edgbaston yesterday, writes Stuart Hess. FOR a fortnight now, South Africans have been pussy-footing around calling the Springboks the favourites in the upcoming back-to-back Test matches against the All Blacks. There is good reason for this. On black-and-white, the New Zealanders have dominated the fixture since the game went professional. They enjoy a complimentary record in SA, winning 24 of the 50 Test played here.
