GOLDEN AGE Thirty years ago, when Eurostar first launched, I travelled regularly to Paris and Lille in first class. The carriages were rarely full, but it was the start of a new adventure, although in the beginning, many were frightened of taking this new mode of transport. AFTER THE furore regarding changes to British Airways Executive Club, which will see Tier Point earning aligned to money spent, the airline has revised its plans. An element of earning by sector has been reintroduced, with members able to earn Bronze status by taking 25 flights with a BA code, and Silver status by taking 50 flights. The refreshed ‘sectors travelled’ system will not be available to attain Gold status, however. Additionally, BA has announced a new longer-lasting and more generous Bonus Tier Point offer, adding that: “It’s expected the airline will always offer members a Bonus Tier Point proposition in addition to the general 1 Tier Point for £1 earning mechanism.” The carrier also reemphasised the removal of the current limit for Tier Points earning on BA Holidays packages, and…

HEAD TO the airport extra early this spring to enjoy new lounges. In January, Lufthansa reopened its refurbished lounge at London Heathrow T2, featuring updated furnishings and business travellerfriendly facilities such as chain curtains to section off workspaces and two private phone booths. Emirates also opened its US$5 million lounge at Bangkok Suvarnabhumi’s Satellite 1 Terminal. The facility has capacity for up to 250 guests and includes showers as well as wireless charging stations. Meanwhile in February, Turkish Airlines opened its seventh international lounge at Tokyo Narita’s Terminal 1 South Wing. Set to double in size, the current capacity is for 105 guests and its features include showers, relaxation areas, dedicated workspace, daybeds with apron views, a VIP room and a baby care room. Air Canada will resume flights between Ottawa and Heathrow on 31 March after a four-year hiatus. The four-times-weekly seasonal service will run until 25 October. Virgin Atlantic will launch flights between Heathrow and Riyadh on 30 March, with a daily service operated by the carrier’s A330neo aircraft. It joins BA and Saudia on the route. easyJet will launch twice-weekly summer seasonal flights between Southampton and Paris Orly on 31 March, departing the UK airport on Monday and Friday evenings. The top 10 most popular international travel routes BY ANNUAL SEATS (2024) LAST YEAR’S BUSIEST international flight route was a 105-minute journey between Hong Kong and Taipei, Taiwan. However, the number of seats between the two cities remains below pre-pandemic levels, according to a report by aviation analytics company OAG. In total, seven carriers, including Cathay Pacific, Taiwan’s state-owned China Airlines and Hong Kong Airlines, offered 6.78 million seats between the two cities last year. More than 30 flights take off each way daily, with multiple departing every hour during peak times in the morning and evening. AIRPORTS ARE digging deeper into travellers’ pockets with inflated terminal-side drop-off fees. Since the start of the year, both London Heathrow and Edinburgh Airport have upped their charges by £1. Entering the drop-off zone at Heathrow will now set you back £6, while stopping at Edinburgh Airport’s drop-off/pick-up zone costs £6 for the first ten minutes and an extra £1 for each minute thereafter. If you don’t mind being further from the terminal, there are a couple of drop-off options that are free for up to 30 minutes. Heathrow offers a free drop-off at its Park & Ride facility, with a complimentary 15-minute shuttle bus transfer to the terminal. EUROSTAR HAS resumed its direct service from Amsterdam Centraal to London St Pancras. The service had been on hold since June last year due to renovation works at the Dutch hub, which meant that border controls couldn’t take place – passengers had to disembark in Brussels before travelling onto London. With the revamp now in its final stages, the London-bound service is up and running, operating three times a day. The service will carry up to 400 passengers per journey until the end of the month, ramping up to 600 from 22 April when a new boarding point opens. HEATHROW HAS INCREASED investment in its carbon-cutting scheme for a fourth year. In 2025, £86 million will be available to airlines through the airport’s Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) incentive scheme, and the aim is for 3% of aviation fuel used at Heathrow – equivalent to 187,000 tonnes – to be SAF. Heathrow continues to lead on SAF use in the UK, with the incentive pitched 1% higher than the UK mandate. The technology works by using a ring of hydrogel within a piece of paper that serves as an electrolyte and a separator. It offers a comparable lifespan to lithiumion batteries and is lighter, cheaper, safer and versatile enough for everyday devices. By using renewable materials, it can biodegrade in six weeks when buried in soil. Indeed it was. I reeled with shock at the fact that resort fees had migrated across the Atlantic and struck at the heart of the Bundesrepublik. Here it was in black and white, another example of hoteliers’ drip pricing. Check-in was a breeze in Zone C, with clear signage and lots of desks, meaning there was no queue. Although there were construction works, it was easy to navigate our way upstairs and through Fast Track, which now operates without the need to take any liquids or laptops out of bags. What's it like? Le Meurice is one of Paris’ most illustrious hotels, opened in 1835 by Charles-Augustin Meurice to appeal to Brits holidaying in Paris. The property takes up a stretch of the famous arcade-lined Rue de Rivoli, facing the Jardin des Tuileries and a short walk from the city’s sights. Tiled flooring with the hotel’s greyhound dog emblem signposts the entrance, and revolving doors transport guests from the crowded road to a tranquil space with a warming scent. The lobby has a luxe feel, but also one of slight mystery thanks to subtly integrated surrealist installations – from a double-seated chair to a frosted mirror where guests can write messages that disappear overnight. Koenigshof, a Luxury Collection Hotel, Munich

What's it like? Juxtaposed with the neo-classical curves and scrolls of the Palace of Justice next door, Koenigshof is a striking sight in central Munich – nine storeys tall, geometric and angular. Nieto Sobejano architects, however, has made sure to incorporate limestone and gold gilded windows to keep within the architectural theme of the streets surrounding it. The contemporary feel continues inside. All nine floors look onto a central atrium, while corridors feature gold walls and dark flooring. The hotel was incredibly quiet during my stay: not only in my room, which had great soundproofing, but also in the public spaces. What's it like? On a wintry Monday night, I pass several empty dining rooms in Mayfair – diners no doubt curled up on sofas at home instead. That is, until I reach the buzzy new hotspot Fonda, where the heat has been turned up to warm your soul and stomach. Tucked down Heddon Street, away from chaotic Regent Street, is the new Mexican restaurant from chef Santiago Lastra – co-owner of London’s Michelin-starred KOL. It’s a welcome arrival in London, where I’ve experienced several masquerades of Mexican cuisine. Named after a family-owned Mexican eatery, Fonda is no such fake. Instead, it takes you on a trip across the country’s various regions via contemporary cuisine and bright hacienda-style interiors. Background BMW’s giant limo is a key rival to the beautifully appointed Mercedes S-Class and Land Rover Range Rover. A living room on wheels, this fabulously equipped executive-mover offers a sublime ride and equipment levels matching a Rolls-Royce. While saloons have fallen out of favour in recent years, replaced by high-sided SUVs, big BMWs still possess a certain cache. Only available as a plug-in hybrid – unless you opt for the all-electric i7 – the M760e is the most potent, with engineering tweaks from the brand’s ‘M’ Motorsport division. The three-litre petrol engine is mated to a small, 18.7kW electric motor that powers the BMW from 0-62mph in just 4.3 seconds -impressive considering its largess. THE ILLUSTRIOUS Cellars in the Sky awards were initially known as the less catchy ‘Business Class Wine Survey’. There was no mention of first class, and categories were limited to white and red wines. Today the gamut extends to rosé, sparkling, fortified and dessert wines – plus we acknowledge the best overall cellar, and the alliance whose member carriers scored best. Former editor Graham Boynton first launched the survey “in answer to complaints from numerous travellers about the quality of the wine they were being served when travelling in business class”.
