As I write, just before the magazine goes to the printer, another edition of SailGP has just concluded, held in Los Angeles, USA on a very tight racecourse. After disappointing results in Auckland and Sydney, the Black Foils bounced back to take second for the event, behind Canada. Although they led the pack at the end of Day One, light, flukey winds challenged the teams on Day Two and in the final the Black Foils squandered a good lead by falling off the foils. Nonetheless, second place was enough to see them back near the top of the leaderboard heading to San Francisco. The cat’s performance is more affected by weight when compared to a LPRC (also known as LRC), so equipment and comforts may be sacrificed. New Zealand has a rich jet-boating heritage and, since their invention, jet boats have evolved in construction type, hull shape and power. Over recent years the popularity of small or ‘mini’ jet boats and powered inflatables has added a fresh chapter to this boating story. Mid-Canterbury cropping farmer Ollie MSharpe is the epitome of a mad-keen jetboater, albeit relatively new to the scene. He bought his 3.5m alloy Rakaia Marine boat running a 2.2-litre Subaru car engine and single-stage Hamilton jet unit a bit over two years ago – partly inspired by watching the YouTube adventures of other Kiwi boaties. Fishing gear that multi-tasks

But most anglers lack the money to buy even a fraction of what’s available (nor do they have partners willing to put up with all this ‘nonsense’!), and those that do find they can’t safely stow all that gear onboard most boats. With more than 43 years of experience, John Parrish – ably assisted by wife Linda – is among this country’s top Race Officers. This is their story. Born in England in 1948, John was the second child of Ken and Joan Parrish. On a beautifully sunny spring day with a steady 10-knot wind, I was at the Takapuna Beach boat ramp, chatting with a young sailor launching his International Moth. He was training for the International Moth World Championships, scheduled for Manly Beach in January. I told him had inherited Flotsam, one of the I first two Moths built in New Zealand. We joked about adding foils and entering her in the event. Local word of mouth had her built by Bailey & Lowe for the Yates family of Parengarenga Harbour. The Wagener family themselves have a rich history there too and are connected to the Subritzky family. The 25th NZ Antique and Classic Boat Show held at Lake Rotoiti in the Nelson Lakes National Park over the weekend (March 1-2) had all the usual ingredients – restored pleasure craft, hardy working boats and retro steam launches – and was capped off with perfect weather. “We’ve held the show when the weather was so bad the Cook Strait Ferry couldn’t sail, we’ve turned out in gumboots and puffers and we ran a reduced show during Covid,” said founder Pete Rainey. “But on our 25 th anniversary we had blue skies, bright sunshine and just enough wind for the sailing race – won by Nelsonian John Bailey in his Flying Dutchman dinghy in a record time.” This year a record 158 boats and a crowd of more than two…

THE WINNER OF BOATING NEW ZEALAND MAGAZINE’S INAUGURAL NZ RETRO BOAT TROPHY WENT TO TUGBOAT, a Savage Electra Glass ski-boat designed in Australia but manufactured in Christchurch in the 1970s. The award was presented at this year’s Antique & Classic Boat Show, the 25 th edition of this popular event held every year at Lake Rotoiti in Nelson Lakes National Park. Belonging to Duncan Eliot of Havelock North, this example really caught the eye of the judge, Boating NZ’s Tim Porter, who loved the vessel’s original condition and vibrant colours.
