Looking back on the more recent Marvel Cinematic Universe movies, why do you think fans connected to Black Panther so much? Kevin Feige: The whole world-creation of Wakanda was paramount for [director] Ryan Coogler when he started. He wanted to stay true to some of what appeared in the comic books, but he also took a trip to Africa soon after he signed on board. He brought back with him all sorts of knowledge about the different cultures over there – ideas for color schemes, for materials, for fabrics – to infuse Wakanda with the heightened element of its comic book counterpart, but also with real, true African cultures. Scarlett Johansson: When I did Iron Man 2, I didn’t know if audiences would accept my interpretation of this character. While I knew there were many different dramatic directions that we could go in and different parts of the character that we could reveal, at that point it was just an introduction to this character. It wasn’t until the first Avengers movie that I got to work with Joss Whedon and really work on Natasha’s characterization and develop her backstory. I saw it with my son and a bunch of his friends in a little postindustrial town up in mid-Connecticut, filled with working-class people. I was in disguise. I’d never seen a reaction like that after a movie. People were screaming and yelling. A kid took off his shirt and jumped up on the chairs, saying, “I’m gonna riot! Where is Thor at as Endgame starts? Chris Hemsworth: If Thor: Ragnarok showed Thor at his wackiest and Infinity War showed Thor at his best, Avengers: Endgame shows Thor at his worst. Emotionally and physically, every aspect of him is broken, lost, and uncertain. That was a whole new journey for him and it felt like I was playing a completely different character. Is Hawkeye a fun character to play? Jeremy Renner: It was something I dreamed of for a long time. There’s a lot of value and a lot at stake for him. The Russos slipped that idea to me early on and I just couldn’t be more excited to go work with them and see what else they would come up with. There are always physical challenges in these movies, but there are more emotional challenges in Avengers: Endgame. She suffers such abuse from her father, Thanos, who happens to be the ultimate Marvel Super Villain. We’re all fighting against him, and Nebula has an explosion of emotions because of her past and what she experienced with him. The whole thing is a very emotional, bitter, maybe weirdly cathartic experience for her. What has Josh Brolin’s performance brought to the dynamic between Thanos and Nebula?
