A Georgia woman who drove over an hour with an Apple iPad stuck in her car’s front bumper said the tablet computer was intact and functioning when she found it. The iPad, mistakenly left on the roof of another car, flew off at 40 mph and struck Alexa Crisa’s vehicle as she drove around the Atlanta suburbs of Marietta and Roswell, the New York Daily News reported Friday. “I went to Target and ran errands with this iPad hanging out of my bumper. TABLET SALES TO REACH $64 BILLION IN 2013; UP 28% AS TIDE TURNS TO ANDROID, ACCORDING TO ABI RESEARCH

OYSTER BAY, N.Y.- The convenience and mobility benefits afforded by tablet computers are showing no signs of slowing interest after record unit shipments and revenues were reported by device vendors in 2012. In 2013, approximately 150 million tablets (up 38% year-over-year) are forecasted to ship globally worth an estimated $64 billion (up 28% from 2012) in potential end-user revenues, according to market intelligence firm ABI Research. So far, Apple has reigned since the introduction of its iPad in 2010, though Samsung and others continue to erode its early success. NETBOOKS, ONCE INTEL’S COMPUTER OF THE FUTURE, NOW DRIVEN TO ‘EXTINCTION’ BY THE iPAD

Intel once touted the “netbook,” a strippeddown laptop running the chipmaker’s Atom mobile processor, as a new class of small, mobile computer that would bridge the gap between smartphones and laptops. While Intel correctly described the category, the company bet on the wrong device. Tablets like the iPad filled that category and the netbook is headed for “extinction,” research firm IHS said Friday. IHS forecasts that 4 million netbooks will sell this year, down 72 percent from 2012. “The iPad and other tablets came in a new form factor that excited consumers while also offering improved computing capabilities, leading to a massive loss of interest in netbooks,” wrote Craig Stice, senior principal analyst for compute platforms at IHS. REGULATORY REPORT HINTS AT THE SCALE OF APPLE’S PRINEVILLE DATA CENTER

The first phase of Apple’s Prineville data center will apparently be relatively small, at least by the standards of custom data centers. Apple won’t discuss the size of its project, but state records show that the company is installing just a quarter of the backup generating capacity of Facebook’s Prineville server farm right up the road. Construction began last fall on the first of two, 338,000-square-foot buildings that Apple plans on the bluff above town. Apple is expanding its data center network to support its iCIoud service, which stores customers’ photos, music, movies and other digital material. HARTFORD, Connecticut - A securities trader admitted Monday that he participated in a scheme involving the unauthorized purchase of about $1 billion of Apple stock that wound up costing his employer $5 million, federal prosecutors said. RUMORED LOW-COST iPHONE SUGGESTED AS APPLE’S ENTRY INTO NEW MARKETS

A rumored low-cost iPhone would cannibalize sales from the more expensive model but give Apple entry into the low-end smartphone market, a U.S. analyst says. Investment analyst Gene Munster of Piper Jaffray said he expects Apple to begin offering a $300 non-subsidized iPhone starting in September, CNET reported Tuesday.
