MY recent trip to Fraser Island reminded me that a quick trip away is better than no trip at all. ISUZU Ute Australia has refreshed its MU-X and D-MAX line-ups for 2023, with the updated models set to be in showrooms from December 1, 2022. In good news for buyers, pricing remains unchanged following adjustments made earlier in the year. Driven by customer feedback, the changes for 2023 are mainly cosmetic, but there are a few additions that will significantly benefit off-road tourers and 4x4ers. One of the most important improvements for the MU-X is that LS-U and LS-T models are both equipped with a new tyre-pressure monitoring system (TPMS). THE 16th Drive4Life (D4L) event, dubbed the Iconic Corner Country Pubs tour, was an overwhelming success, with the touring party travelling on the ‘Great Desert Tracks’ of Outback SA, Qld and NSW, visiting some of the most iconic pubs and historical sights, and indulging in some breathtaking scenery and points of interest along the way. Starting at Silverton, NSW, all members gathered for orientation, meet-and-greets and vehicle checks, followed by a few beverages around a roaring campfire. The vehicles were then split into groups, departing in staggered starts with 30-minute intervals, allowing for safe travels on corrugated tracks. The police sergeant was actually quoted on Channel 7 News as saying: “This is a really good story of people well-prepared.” I’m not sure having a sat phone, especially if that is all you have, is enough to warrant being called well-prepared! LAND ROVER Australia has consolidated its Defender 90 line-up for MY23 with just six variants available, and only one of them is diesel-fuelled. That is the D250 in S specification, and we’re driving it here to reacquaint ourselves with the stubby Defender. The D250 S starts at $95,590, but this test car is fitted with a few extras that take the price as tested up to $106,263 plus on-road costs. WHAT DOES GVM MEAN? YOUR vehicle’s GVM, or Gross Vehicle Mass is the amount of weight you can carry combined with the total mass of the vehicle (known as kerb weight). If you have a kerb weight of 2500kg and a payload of 650kg, the Gross Vehicle Mass is 3150kg. That means you can add or carry 650kg of accessories or passengers, before you're over GVM. Fibreglass mock-up kits are available for a range of Jeeps to give them classic styling. That’s without even looking at the endless 70s-inspired vinyl wraps adorning Troopies all over the country. ON OUR most recent desert jaunt leading a trip for my son’s tour company, Moon Tours (www.moontours.com. au), we came across a total of five burnt-out vehicles dotted along a couple of remote desert tracks.
