When I sat down to write this editorial, it was with the intention of exhorting you all to go to the Farmyard Party on 21-23rd June at Duncombe Park up in darkest Northern Yorkshire (or down depending from where you’re starting). It was at Pendine that Sir Malcolm Campbell reached 174.8mph in the legendary Bluebird in 1927. That record stood for almost ninety years until actor Idris Elba achieved 180.361mph in a 650hp Bentley Continental Super Sport twin-turbo W12 in 2015. Zef Eisenberg beat that on his first run, despite finding that the rear tyre on the Hayabusa was falling apart. He explained: “The bike had been spinning the rear wheel for two miles at 240mph. We were using a GP racing tyre, too—the best you can get, but I assume it’s not used to that much power or wheelspin. That’s why these records are so hard to achieve. Honda Looks Back

The Japanese manufacturer has just filed a patent with the US Patent Office for a rear-facing camera/radar system to be built into a motorcycle helmet. According to the application, the helmet would feature a rear-facing camera producing a live feed of everything behind the rider, but, unlike other designs, the information would then be relayed not to a heads up display in the helmet, but to the bike’s instrument panel. Honda’s system also includes a radar system designed to detect faster-than-average moving vehicles behind the rider and alert them to potential accidents although, at present, this is more pie in the sky than down on the ground. The Rage is actually a rather good-looking machine, particularly in the minimal, black-out form in which it was presented in Utrecht. It has Öhlins forks, a 7-inch display screen, monoshock suspension and Brembo brakes, but NXT is most proud of the carbon fibre chassis which, it says, makes the bike twice as strong (the frame is constructed to aviation strength standards) and 25 per cent lighter than similar bikes, and also provides superior handling and braking. Specifications—always the most important element of any electric bike—were not revealed at the show, although, with the first deliveries planned for the summer of 2019, that may have changed by the time you read this. For example, that upright ‘ducktail’ mudguard is very striking. These ‘ski jumps’ were completely out of fashion for a while, but, with some modifications, it works. Meanwhile, the patina-effect paintwork of Frank ‘Inca’ Stienen is crazy, the painted rust on the weathered gray and the worn-out graphics suggest that this could be a real barnfind here. For the last couple of years we had attended the show on Sunday so for a change we made the effort to get there on Saturday—as apparently so did half of the planet. 'Busy' was a word that was used often and without fear of being challenged throughout the day. Back then, motorcycle drag racing was something of a fledgling sport. Yes, since someone bought the second-ever motorcycle, there were races to be had, but, while circuit motorcycle racing thrived in the first part of the 20th century, drag racing on a purpose-built quarter mile strip was the province of cars. Yes, it’s true, bikers are big softies. There’s a public perception that bikers are the scum of the earth, will rob you blind, beat you up, sell you drugs and have their wicked way with your nearest and dearest. Whilst some of that may be true, there comes a time when none of it is true and it occurs in a few different circumstances, two of which have happened to me recently. A biker will turn into a great big softie when seeing their newborn child or grandchild for the first time.
